The Culture City Live Review

Los Campesinos!
with Jeffrey Lewis and The Jitters and The Nice Device
May 24, 2008
Magic Stick

I Don't know what was more fun on a Saturday night Watching game one of the Stanley cup final of seeing a fun gig of a band you know by listen to your tunes on BBC Radio 1 and loving your debut C.D.

so i was hoping that "Los Campesinos!" the band from Scotland live set was good as there fun to listen to debut CD "Hold On Now, Youngster" which sound amsome, while at the same time our beloved red wings was playing game one of the Stanley cup final vs the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The gig was happening at the same time as the Red Wings gagme so we break down the bands with the game in this review.

first, there was "The nice device" Playing there second gig since Alicia Gbur and and bassist Matt Lannoo[yes, the first time Alicia and Matt together in the same post] after filling in for "The Von Bondies" at the begin of the year and they sound really great to played live aging to Detroit they played a lot of there old stuff and not only that a few new songs one of them have a working title called "Cupid" and "Alicia Burg" Look really great last night as well.

it was too tough to keep one eye on "the nice device" and the eye on the game as they played to a scored-less draw on Period One but we did scored 1st but it was wave off because of Goaltender interference, ouch.

Just after the second period begin the second band of the night is NYC "Jeffrey Lewis" and his band "The Jitters" which make up of of his brother Jack, Drummer David Beauchamp, and his Ex-girlfriend Helen Schreiner they did a very well-done set which mostly qurick cover of the old 70's English anarchist punk band Crass, i thought there was real good the was some story as well a couple of time did some Drawing broad story which he did himself [he also sell comic book as well].

Some fan like the set, i though it was good set it you basic moppey indie folk rock but it was in easy pace, meanwhile the wings score two in the second from a Mikael Samuelsson wrap around to put us in the lead 1-0.

All was hoping for a great third period to hold on to the lead and the the band the hard core fans came to see the seven piece indie pop band from Cardiff, Wales "Los Campesinos!" was fun as advertised, The kids play about a good hour set of 14 songs most of it from very wonderful debut album "Hold on Now, Youngster" [Art & Crafts] they really rock the place with a the fans dancing in from of the stage and to some mild jumping around as they play song like "Death to Los Campesinos!", the very good "You! Me! Dancing!", the heart felt "My Year in Lists" and the longest title song i ever heard "This Is How You Spell, "HAHAHA, We Destroyed the Hopes and Dreams of a Generation of Faux-Romantics"

Not on that they played a Pavement cover "Frontwards" which is sweet.

the band have fun playing to the crowd and i also like the heartful trading vocals between lead singer Gareth and keyboards Alek with and the nice touch of the violins by Harriet and least we not forget the other member of the band Ellen, Neil, Ollie , Tom, there so good to see live UK should enter them in Next year Eurovision Song Contest.

that positive energy made have work as Mikael Samuelsson scored his second of the game and goal by Dan Cleary and Henrik Zetterberg keep the game out of reach as they bet the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 to take a 1-0 lead, not only that Los Campesinos! is a good band but brought good luck to our red wings.
