DAY THREE
JULY 3rd, 2008

Yo Kevin, Don't Cancelled us, bro

Last night was the big night to see a band that i would have paid on every other night would paid 20 bucks to see at any other gig in Detroit area. but since it was a July 4th holiday we were the lucky one to see on of the best collective in all of Canada, it was the best gig that have all be waiting for, it the must fun we have all real fans was having a fun time, it was one of the well know alt. bands around and at the end of the gig it was a great show that almost did not happened.

Yes, of all the gigs that would not cancelled in a major Detroit gig fest it would be the Broken Social Scene the popular Toronto group almost most pulled out in the last second when lead frontman Kevin Drew the mastermind of this big band who can range anywhere from 5 to 27 member woke up with a bad back he went to his cairoparther later in the morning and it was found to have a mid to lower back he took a pain killer and thought of Scrubbing the whole gig.

But Kevin drew did not want to disappoint his fans who have seen BSS, those who have not seen BSS [this blogger included] and those who came all away from there home country Canada did the show as he put it like a 72 year old man.

The band ran thought there select cut from there three recorded albums Feel Good Lost (2001), You Forgot It in People (2002), and there breakout album Broken Social Scene[2005] and well as some of there show case album Broken Social Scene Presents... Kevin Drew - Spirit If... (2007)and Broken Social Scene Presents... Brendan Canning - Something For All Of Us... (2008).

They play there well know songs like "Stars and Sons", "Pitter Patter Goes My Heart", and "Cause = Time", "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" and "Lover's Spit".

i also have a fun time hearing listen "Fire Eye'd Boy" from the last album which was well played and not only that to warp up there set which took over a ninety minutes did a acoustic version of there one of my fave song "Almost Crimes" from "You Forgot It in People" which was a very good version.

you have to give to Kevin Drew and his band mates for showing and playing the gig thought out the pain Kevin was felling because it this gig was a no go it wouldn't be good coming of the heavy rains force Cancelled gig of De La Soul and that would have not been good and if you wondering there was seven members and no female member of the B.S.S. so no Feist[who i saw back in April at the Fillmore], No Amy Millan[who i saw play a great show at the Crofoot ballroom back in Late March.]and no Emily Haines [who i have seen more times then any of the ladies of the BSS, four times(3 with her main band "Metric"and one with her backing band "The Soft Skelintion)]

Lucky i got to see "Broken Social Scene" whole set start to finish[which by the way was introduce by Magic Bag Booker and a DJ we miss hearing on Detroit Radio] before that i was listen on the park stage to a local collective which been getting a lot of local buzz as of late "The Four Hours Friend"

The Group fronted by Dale Wilson and his pretty as a picture Girlfriend Jenna Cook and Ex-Ghost City member Stephen Palmer the band played a very good 45 minutes set of atl rock Country it was great to see live i may even ask them to played one of my culture city live DJ Nights, and there great to listen to.

also i saw Eddie Baranek and his new dirty bluegrass band Called "Shotgun Wedding" who i thought was good but you have to understand if you every read this site from the start i am not a big country fan expect if i hear some Devin Scivan play on my CD player.

i was mostly tired from the night before where "the dials" play at the Belmont and not only that was doing a Wrap up from last night and there was a period i was tried and sleepy and worst one of my close bar friend was having a picnic on the 4th of july but i have to go to cityfest, but i did come back did taste the food but i was full with in 30 minutes and fell for the rest of the night. Ouch!

Two more days to go and on most Saturday in years past i would be looking forward for music line up but promoter handed over daylight to Disney and worst got us Aly and A.J..

But Don't worried Culture City Warriors there will be good music Today from the like of Calexico, The Muggs,Zoos of Berlin, and news sound from Great Lakes Myth Society,Silverghost and a new i have been waiting to see because of a great name Lightening Love so the day is not lost.

Live and Local Review - 2008 Comerica Cityfest

DAY TWO
JULY 3rd, 2008

The Day One Do Over

Welcome to Day two of Comerica Cityfet or is it Day one.

Last Night was the first real Good Day of the midyear music/food/culture/shopping event in Detroit New Center Area after Wednesday night heavy down pour that wiped out the night entertainment and force NOMO and De La Soul to cancelled there gig and force Four band who were going to play the Pure Detroit and Park Stage to the Garden Bowl inside the Magic stick.

After a full 14 hours later with a little Drying out, a little sleep and a little Chang of Clothes we go back to W. Grand Bvld. and 2nd St. for night two and this was a decent line up Not a big form the wash up night one but good.

During the wait For the music to begin i check out the offend during the Cityfest including a display of the NASCAR event at Indy speedway for there Late July "Brickyard 400" i got some cool trading ad cards and there was a Sharp display of the New HDTV which we may need for the Digital TV Crossover in February 2009 and i got a chapinoo sampler at the Starbucks van.

The Night Big act was on the main stage when "The Zomibe" a old 60's band From the UK feathing Colin Blunstone on lead vocals and Rod Argent on keyboards and vocals, now i was not expecting much i was thinking to say around for a few song and go to the park stage, but the old timers who been around since the 60's keep me in the whole time.

The band know how to play a great song into building up the song adding drama to the song climaxing to end they even got in some of the youngster in to the gig and not only that there was into it.

Other band i like was Danny Kroha brand new band "The Readies" and i got to tell this band is really better than his other well know band "The Gories" and "The Demolition Doll Rods" the band played there a monder old school Rock and roll, the songwriting is that good and it played out really well, to show you way Danny Kroha is a true Survier of the Detroit Scene.

Also playing a great at the park stage is the alt.country rock band "Scarlet Oaks" who is so great live and as they make there so more rock more than country and not only than then drummer noelle christine is still a great drummer and there good

Now because of time other distraction and other gig i only saw part of other bands, i saw a little bit of "Tally Hall" from Ann Arbor who was O.K. they would sound better it was only inside, also saw part of local rock band Duende! with there Western psychedelic sound, i thought they was good nothing special, and i did see the last band on the park stage "The Volebeats" i only saw three songs from them from the band that feather Matt Smith i think they was good, but i have to leave Cityfest to go to the Belmont to see the Dials playing on the same night[Dials review will come after Cityfest.]

So two day, three more to go and i got to tell you it will be a big free Social Scene on the parking lot when Broken Social Scene play to the crowd and it going to be fun.

Today live at Cityfest with tonight 4Cast

Live and Local Review - 2008 Comerica Cityfest

DAY ONE
WEDNESDAY JULY 2ND

Welcome to Soak cityfest

For the first time in almost Seven years i have been caught in a real bad storm at a major outdoor music gig, as it rain and rain and rain all night long as the entire SE Michigan area as well as the New Center Area as the rain made impossible to do the rest of the night.

before i left for cityfest all the weather people did say it was going to rain late in the night you know it was going to be bad when radar was showing Thunder storm coming up in the Detroit area and i thought the was like the office was going to flood aging for the second time in a week.[Which it did not, Thank god.]

The Sky began to turn dark around the 6:30-7 PM i was at the main stage watching Detroit News Battle of the band winner "Avienne" in the middle of the set i saw a lot of cloud lighting [not the ground lighting] and i thought it would get bad pretty quick, but it it hold it own and it did not rain until the last song of there set where it begin to drizzle.

it began to rain and i was only thing one thing go inside the biggest complex with a long walkway under ground, i went in the Fisher Building to ride out the storm during the nearly two hours as it began to rain heavy many of the people who was there begin filing in to get away from the rain and not only that get away from the lighting.

I Went downstairs to the Clubhouse bar which is located downstairs in the Fisher building, i went to check of there any radar show how bad the weather was but a present surprise the TV have "So you think you can Dance" on and the local Fox Station WJBK-TV have a little mini map with live radar and it was raining all over and i was thinking there is no way they can get off the rest of the night

During the long wait for any word of when it going to clear up the four bands Magic Shop, The Dead Bodies,The Hentchmen, and The Silent Years got in contact with the good folks at the magic stick to book a last minutes gig for those who got rain out, but since there was a band already playing at the stick the only other place to play was the Garden Bowl and they play it the the dining lobby.

by 9:30 PM know the day was a total loss everybody who was at the fisher they made it way to the magic stick, the worst part about that we did not get word if the whole day cancelled but judging by the radar it was, but knowing there is four more day of this to go but the good news it will be in better weather.

as for the music before the rain i did see two band at city fest, Former Sirens Aran Ruth play her mellow down solo set as she play a nice folk pop which was nice on the ears and not only that she look very old school dress in 1940's dress.

and my opinion the band i saw the South Lyon band and winner of this year Detroit News Battle of the band Avienne, i thought they was good but some they sound too close to all the bad radio and overproduce song i hear all the time, one of my personal highlights was have one song warp around "the Verve" "Bitter Sweet Symphony" which i thought was cool.

After about two hours of waiting it out and going from Fisher to Northern Lights for a short time and a couple of attempt i did get to the stick as i did catgut the last song from The Magic Shop Steve newaur brand new band. i only got to see the last two band "The Dead Bodies" who i thought was good and the best buzz band in Detroit right now "The Silent Years" who did a great get with a crazy finish in the end let me tell you this band will be fun to watch in the years to come.

well i going to finish up now licking my wound and drying out for day two.

Today live at Cityfest with tonight 4Cast

As you know if you where there last night

The Wednesday portion of city fest was total wash out big time with a lot of rain pouring in the SE Michigan area and let me tell you it was not pretty form going to point A to point B in rain that won't stop.

So that mean Bump,NOMO and the star of this main stage Hip hop De La Soul was cancelled and worst De La Soul had to fly out of town so you can forget De La Soul, but "The Magic Shop", "The Hentchmen", "The Dead Bodies" and "The Silent Years" all relocated for a last minutes show at the The Garden Bowl inside the magic stick.

all dought last night was a total washout, Cityfest continued and the good news it will not rain for the rest of the weekend so there is clear sky all around, so that mean Broken Social Scene still OK for Friday Night.

and According to the Unofficial Official wheater page of all culture City the Local4caster from WDIV, don't worried it will be clear from 6 to Midnight [it closed at 11 PM] with temp at 72 and dropping to around 60 by night end.

CONTEMPT
(France/1963—restored—directed by Jean-Luc Godard)

Jean-Luc Godard’s subversive Contempt is a star-studded CinemaScope epic, a brilliantly personal work of art and perhaps the most fully realized of the director’s career. Contempt (Le Mépris) stars Michel Piccoli as a screenwriter torn between the demands of a proud director (played by legendary Fritz Lang), an arrogant American producer (Jack Palance, whose sentiments include “I like gods. I know exactly how they feel”), and his disillusioned wife (Brigitte Bardot), as he doctors the script for a new film version of The Odyssey. A brilliantly elliptical study of marital breakdown and artistic compromise, Contempt is also one of the most physically ravishing widescreen films ever made. The dazzling color cinematography by Raoul Coutard has been restored in this new, eye-popping 35mm print. (103 min.)

And Saturday Monster Movie
Deadly Mantis 2
In The Deadly Mantis (1957)

a prehistoric praying mantis the size of an extra-large earthmover is released from an iceberg where he’s been slumbering in suspended animation for ages; he quickly gets to work laying waste to Washington and New York, and seems to be planning total bug domination of the world. The heroic scientist is played by Craig Stevens, star of TV’s popular Peter Gunn. (79 min.)

The Monolith Monsters

probably the most unique monster concept of the era—stars Grant Williams (The Incredible Shrinking Man) as a geologist who races against time to stop the invasion of deadly rocks from space that expand at a fantastic rate, smashing everything in their path and turning towns and people to stone!

The DFT will also welcome TV20's NIGHTMARE SINEMA host WOLMAN MAC, who will appear live to introduce the double feature! (78 min.)

Marc Riley's Musical Time Machine

Every Monday 6:30 PM EDT

Programme 4 - Nicky Wire

The Musical Time Machine journeys back to 1996, where following the release of the hugely successful album Everything Must Go, Manic Street Preachers were in the public's eye.

They were also famous for the disappearance of bandmate Richey James, the previous year.

Nicky Wire joined Jo Wiley on her Radio 1 show. Tired of speaking on behalf of his absent bandmate, Wire gave a frank and honest view of his experiences of the past year, and his hopes for the future.

Broadcasting extracts from that interview, Marc will also speak to Jo Wiley about her own memories of that show.

The Definitive History of UK Dance Music

Every Saturday 2:04 PM EDT

Programme 3: Underground, overground - 1994 to the present day

In 1993, dance music reached a critical mass. The Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994 effectively outlawed raves and so the ravers became clubbers - and moved back indoors.

Dance music became big business; Ministry of Sound began to expand its empire - from clubs through to a record label, radio and TV stations. Radio 1, which had ignored it, now had a variety of dance shows on offer.

Jarvis Cocker's Musical Map of Sheffield

Tuesday - 5:33 PM EDT

Former Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker takes you on an intimate tour of Sheffield.

In his evocative musical map, Jarvis creates a soundtrack that drives his memories, feelings and observations about his home town.

Growing up in a city that was still reeling from the loss of big industry, Jarvis recalls his childhood, surrounded by family, and listening to conversations about love and disappointment.

Along the way, he introduces the music of Sheffield legends, including Joe Cocker, Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League and Artery.
