Day Zero
8-8-08

The Opening Ceremonies

the word i have been hearing over and over today in describing the opening ceremony
is WOW

that was the reaction about today opening ceremony as the Chinese put on one hell of a show from the sulaut the anticed and monder day china to the long parade of nation which took nearly over two hours long to the way and the way they lit the Calderon i say it was one held of a show and not only that groundbreaking

the used all the stop that begin with 2,008 Drummer and no where not talking about your regaurl drum kit here they did in anticed drum and it was used by there hands at the same time, after that most of the perform was done by a long 500 foot Scroll as past Chinese culture was on full deplay with everything from great wall to opera puppets to astronauts.

after the full deplay as tradition Greece when 1st as it lead the 204 country in the parade of nation and boy it was a long one as the long live with over 10,500 marching in the Olympic stadium AKA as the bird nest it was total long, big time the America got a warm reception as they enter the field.

But the big chree went for the the Team China as they was lead in by flag bearer the great center for the Houston rockets Yao Ming and came in with a thunder chree.

after the speech and the Oaths, the Olympic came running to the track and the last touch bearer was Li Ning, a gold medalist in gymnastics at the 1984 Games in LA he took it from the center of the stage and when up, way up by wires as he ran on the wall on the top lip of the stadium and lit the cauldron and that the games of of the 29 summer game had be gun.

My thought is that the Chinese put on one hell if a show form start to finish and i feel bad for all those country in the further Olympic it going to hard to top this one it was speatacaulr bar none.

ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD
(USA/2007—directed by Werner Herzog)

“No director demonstrates Werner Herzog’s gift for depicting the crushing inhuman power of natural landscapes, and the way that power transforms the human subject into something problematic. The vast empty splendor of Antarctica represents the quintessential Herzog setting and inspiration, with the physicists, biologists and vocanologists Herzog interviews – each struggling to extract meaning from this place – functioning as both comic and heroic doppelgangers within the director’s visionary enterprise. With Herzog’s penchant for lyrical speculation balanced by solid scientific and historical fact, Encounters reveals a place that exists wholly apart from our prosaic day-to-day human society, and represents a decisive work by an artist at the height of his powers.” –Larry Gross, Telluride Film Festival (98 min.)

This upcoming Thursday

DJ SPOOKY'S REBIRTH OF A NATION
This THursday at 8 P.M.

Conceptual artist Paul D. Miller, AKA DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, draws on his celebrated skills as a writer, musician, club DJ, philosopher, and social critic to create a multimedia performance that examines mythmaking and propaganda. Rebirth of a Nation is a video remix of D.W. Griffith’s 1915 silent film The Birth of a Nation, hailed for its use of pioneering editing techniques and reviled for its racist depiction of African-Americans and distorted account of American history. Through Rebirth of a Nation, Miller offers a twenty-first century response to Griffith’s film that questions the fragmented perceptions that make up our complex history. Working in the motif of “DJ as director,” the artist cuts and pastes celluloid sequences “live” to create a new experience. The accompanying soundtrack is a mix of Miller’s electronic compositions, including a score recorded by the acclaimed string ensemble Kronos Quartet. The performance will be followed by a moderated discussion with the artist.

The Deskcair review of today at the PC Olympics

it is now almost a half a day [in real time]or about a full day[in NBC Time] to go until the start of the games of the 29 summer Olympics from Beijing, China

and not only that there will be almost 16 days of almost wall to wall coverage of the 32 Olympics sports either on air on either NBC and the own cable station [CNBC,MSNBC,Bravo,USA,Oxygen, and Telemoundo]on CBC across the river on channel 9 or like me almost 25 little know sports like Team Handball, Badminton, Fencing, Judo, and Table Tennis will be steam on line.

now for the last two days i have been watching the early soccer coverage, i know the flame will be lit on Friday but be cause soccer take a long time to go Thu, it get a early start.

Now the Men did a lot better than the woman in there opening game as Stuart Holden blast one from the penalty area in the 47th minutes to win 1-0 over Japan as they stop a three game score-less skid during internataion play.

Now i know as a soccer the US don't do well in international completions like the wor cup, but it was great to see the USA win the opening game because they will be in tough matches with Netherlands[Sunday] and Nigeria.

Now the ladies need to wake up after giving up two goals in the first five minutes to Norway and loss 2-0, it look like they need to step up on Saturday vs Japan or it can be all over [but don't worried they be OK]

Now i did check out the video player for the NBC Olympics it is good nothing special or any thing like that, i did played the basic player not the one with the sliver light player[Microsoft Hi Def Video Player] the video came along OK but a few time as i was watching it stop in the middle in the action so i hit the play button aging to get it flowing aging.

and there was few switching between games because i have to sit Thu a 30 seconds ad for G.E. Ouch!, this is going to be a long 2 and a half weeks of switching events and a 30 second ad for GE.

One More Note before i warp this post, There will be no hamms at the men’s gymnastics event for the U.S., Paul Hamm pull out two weeks ago because broken right hand and strained left rotator cuff, now his brother Morgan Hamm have pulled out because of a painful left leg, and now the U.S. men’s gymnastics have gone from medal fave to also rans.

Now here how it all will go down for the summer Olympics, i live in Detroit so i can watch the coverage from both NBC and CBC from near by Windsor so almost all the sport will be live on CBC, so for the Opening Ceremonies live on 8-8-08 at 8 second before 8:08, so the show will be the only event that will received the live, local, twitter theament.

You Can Go to Culture City Twitter Page at
http://twitter.com/culturecitynews
and follow the glow by glow Opening Ceremonies
it will start at about 7:30 or 7:45 AM
it depend if i can get up that earlier
and it will end at around some where at about 11 AM or Noon

and i have a view From Desk chair
as i watch it during the game with the post goes up at the end of NBC coverage for those of you what are going to watch NBC prime time coverage which will end between midnight or 1 A.M.

The Live And Local review

Tilly and the Wall
The Magic Stick
August 5, 2008

The New School year does not begin in about adnoder month and the gig i saw at the stick was the pre school warm up prom which it was even before the gig began during the take down of opener "The Ruby Suns" and set up for the Tilly portion of there gig, the stage set up crew thew about 20 to 25 balloons into the crowd just work up the crowd.

and once the band from Omaha rush the stage to preform there 75 minutes set you knew it was going to be a fun gig had by all, this is the most fun i have ever see from a band at the stick as the band play alot New S#(% from there new album called "O", and most of there old S#(% from "wild like Children" and "Bottom of Barrels".

it was fun to band to see the band have fun to getther not only that the band gel together with the vocals of Kianna Alarid and Neely Jenkins mix with the intenst guitar playing of Jamie Presenell and the wonderful tap sounds of his wife Jamie and don't forget Nick White on the keyboards.

The Crowd was having a good time as the band played songs like "Rainbows in the Dark","Sing Songs Along","The Ice Storm, Big Gust, and You", as well the new song "Beat Control" and that footstoping song "Pot Kettle Black" from there news album "O" and my fave Tilly song which i was proud to play at my DJ night "Culture City Live 2" back in may at Northern Light Lounge at New Center "Bad Education" [Ed Note: the Detroit Public School HQ is located in the Fisher building in the New Center Area.]

the crowd really like band that after the there encore when the house music play all of a sudden the gig turn in to a mini dance party as the crowd was dancing for about 15 minutes before it they know it going to be Wednesday and they have to go to work, and remember school is only a months away.

The Open act was really good band from Auckland, New Zealand called "The Ruby Suns" i heard a little bit on there my space page, but there was very good mixing there instermantial stuff with there songs was so great live and not only that very nice after the show when i talk to them briefly, and not only that correct me that Wellington is the Capitol of New Zealand.

there was a local opener Ann Arbor own Charlie Slick who i saw at the detour rock city fest, along with his Partner in Crime Shelley put on a good show with that game show like board and they add a little but extra a bubble machine the turn there set into a little indie version "The Lawrence Welk Show", i know somewhere the late great Don Ho is smiling somewhere enjoying the show and having a chuckle.

END

[and just a reminder you can read a interview i had with the lead singer Till and the Wall lead singer Kianna Alarid, Just scroll down to see the first interview with a band from outside the 313, if it not on the main page just put Tilly and the wall in the Search field, will put a link to it under the new section "The Culture CIty Interview" or just

OH MY GOD, it the go team and then some!

Hello everybody in the local blog space
i hope you have a great weekend

because i had one of those weekend
first it was my 35th birthday, i know i may look young
yes it true i am 35 and still following the indie culture scene
well beyond my high school years

i have a some party at small where Dave and Melody was chatting up a storm
and few friend stop by to wish me happy birthday including Human eye front man and his lovely girl friend.

ate some cake[which was a small one], play mega man on a old NES was some futherrama on the cable tv until close.

But the real fun was on Saturday night where i went to the go! team show at the stick and i got to say it was the best show i have seen all year [now hold on will have a review at the top of this] but the best part was the following events happen after the show.

and no nothing bad happen, all of this was good
and for what you have heard on some other site
This is my version of Saturday night

after watching one of the best shows of the year, i saw friends of the blog jasper from Web Vomit and jrc from fivethreedialtone.com and i ask about the show and jrc and i did have the conservation about who show up to the gig it did go like this

[from the fivethreedialtone site]
FTDT: “Steve, do you know who’s here?”
ICFCC: “Oh yes, The Go! Team!!!!!!!”

but, he did tell me that Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore was here see the show, but i did not believe him for a minute until he told me guess who there behind me, i look and all i said was "OH MY GOD, ELLEN PAGE! FROM JUNO"

yes you hear my correct Ellen Page the breakout star from one of the best movie of last year Juno which i saw at the discount teather this year and it was so wonderful and not only that the Soundtracks total rocks [with Kimya Dawson, Cat Power, Belle & Sebastian, and Sonic Youth]

now i waited for a few minutes to say hi, i did not want to bug her in conversation, i did get to say hi to her tell her i like here in Juno and said you rob of the best actress oscar back in march the conversation only last about two minutes and i was done the time Phil pulled me away and i was not begin rude at any point during the whole five minute's from guess who there to the end of conversation.

after that chance meeting i went up to the stick deck [A.K.A. "The Alley Deck"]to get some fresh air and not only to calm down the ringing in my ear because that show was so loud, the fist person i saw was Liz from the friendly foes, the next person was Detour editor and pubsiher Anthony Morrow and the next person i saw was Jimmy Fallon.

yes, you hear me correct in one of those chance meeting i got to see the man who was on Saturday Night Live for six years was also there to see the go team as well which i was total surrprize as well, we talk and joke for about five or six minutes and talk to him about his upcoming New gig as the new host for late night in Spring of 2009 [right after Conan] to all the cirdidsome of him laghting uncontrollable out of charterer during his SNL day i was so fun i got to meet two star in my own area of culture city. which was cool.

and one more funny thing of my whole Saturday night, i was at the entrance near the stage at the stick deck when jimmy Fallon was heading to my direction, he remember me from 15 minutes ago reach out my hand to shake my hand pull the side comb over move on me, LOL

i was OK i kind of laughed it off,
it was fun meeting two movie stars in the same building in the same day
at the same show
to prove a point that movie do get indie music

WOW!

and you are wondering what there are doing in Detroit
there here to shoot scene for "Whip it" which is direct by Drew Barrymore [who was also star with Jimmy Fallon in the movie "fever pitch" a few year back]
the film is about an ex-beauty pageant contestant (Ellen Page)sneak out of the house in a small town and join a roller derby team.

The film will come out in 2009 and this movie also stars Juliette Lewis[yes that Juliette Lewis from Juliette Lewis and the licks], Marcia Gay Harden, Zoe Bell, and SNL star player Kristen Wiig.

and speaking about the film according to the Detroit free press in today edition Jim Diamond of ghetto recorders is recording some song of sound track, according to the report Landon Pigg and Turbo Fruits are in the sound tracks for the film which will feather some members of the Detroit derby girls which begin it new season this spring.

and know it was a great night but what about the show
Look above for the full review of the good team.

and on this day in 1984 the theme to the movie "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker Jr. hit no.1 on the billboard pop chart and then got sue by Huey Lewis of Huey Lewis and the News because he lift the star of his song "I Want a New Drug", they settle out of court but both wound up in best of the crappy 80's hits CD, Ouch!

But let get to the New Music on this the day where Marcia Brady was born [Maureen McCormick] in 1956, Ex-NBA big man and now Patrick Ewing assistant coach for the Orlando Magic is 46, DJ Funkmaster Flex is 40, Pete Burns of Dead or Alive is 49, and MCA of the Beastie Boys AKA Adam Yauch is a very young 44.

Suzi Quatro's Heroes

Mondays: 6:30

Suzi Quatro presents a series profiling six of her musical Heroes.

Programme 2 - Jackie DeShannon

Jackie DeShannon has made her mark as both a great interpreter of songs by the best composers and as a successful writer.

A singing star on the radio from the tender age of six, as a teenager she was hanging around with the giants of rock 'n' roll.

She had minor hits with Needles and Pins, and When You Walk In The Room, which were both covered by The Searchers.

Her cover of Bacharach and David's What The World Needs Now Is Love made the US top ten in 1965.

Her biggest hit as a recording artist came four years later, in 1969, with Put A Little Love In Your Heart.

As a songwriter, her first US top five hit was Dum Dum, recorded by Brenda Lee. However it was Bette David Eyes, which Jackie co-wrote with Donna Weiss in 1981 and recorded by Kim Carnes, that was a worldwide smash.

In this edition of the series, Suzi and Jackie compare notes on their struggles as women in the male-dominated world of the music business.

This Wheel's on Fire - The Soundscape of 1968

Tuesday 6:30 PM EDT

Lord Sebastian Coe, who was inspired to join his local athletics club by the 1968 Olympic Games, presents this soundscape.

Taking place in Mexico City, the games saw Britain’s David Hemery win the 400m hurdles in world-record time, and USA’s Bob Beamon become the first long-jumper to leap more than 28ft.

It was also on the victory rostrum, during the US national anthem, that sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised gloved fists in the air as a symbol of defiance in the long struggle for civil rights.

Both athletes were expelled from the Games.

Away from Mexico, the world reeled in turmoil and tragedy with the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, tanks on the streets of Prague, and war in Vietnam.

An aural collage of archive recordings, newsreels, newspaper clips and music, form the latest addition in BBC Radio 2's Soundscape series.

Too Much Too Young:
The Story of 2-Tone

Saturday 1:04 PM

Paul Sexton traces the history of 2-Tone records and the band at its centre - The Specials.

1979 saw Ska explode onto the UK's music scene. Leading the wave were The Specials, who tackled social issues, unemployment and racism through their music.

The band were signed to the 2-Tone label, which was the brainchild of The Specials' Jerry Dammers, who wanted to create his own Motown Records - in Coventry.

2-Tone scored seven hit singles, a top-ten album, and a sell-out UK tour - all within its first year. The label also launched the careers of Madness, The Selector and The Beat.

Featuring new interviews from The Specials, Madness, The Beat and The Selector, Paul will also talk to Pete Waterman, Don Letts and Gary Bushall to follow the highs and lows of the label and its bands.
