The Culture City
Festive 50 - 2006

(The Last of Five Part)

This is it

i have reach the end of the line, the last 10 bands in the first ever, and hopefully not the last ever Culture City Festive 50 Countdown of the Fifty bands you have not heard because you are spending way to much time listen to K-Fed or Justin timberlake album.

These are the Fitty bands that shoude matter to you now and in the futher but it you miss any one of the 40 other bands in this Countdown you can check out the right of this menu and check out each of the four other parts of this count down. and just before i reveal the top three i do the Full rundown and aging after the countdown.

But before i run Down the Final ten i have two Honor to mention on the end of the Countdown, one at the beginning and one at the end, the fun part with these best of list is too see the bands that don't get love get there due Mission of Burma, The Thermals, Wolfmother, SEAN LENNON, THOM YORKE, and Final Fantasy(yes kids there is a band called Final Fantasy) got called out for the people who really follow music now if they just when back to the old days of getting there music played.

you see back in the old days they would play a gig on TV where they play a song from there million selling album and there clueless host ask dume questions to know where did they get the band name,(Hey we all ask that question) and there will be some show where they be part of a countdown show where there song get played.

There was not a show here in the U.S (the closest we got to a countdown show was America Top 10 (on TV) and 40 (on Radio) with Casee Kassie), but there was a show that have the record for longest Variety show on TV, it was on BBC-TV for 42 years for a show that was going to aired for Six Weeks, It began on New years day on January of 1964 as Radio DJ Sir Jimmy Savile told viewer it 6:30 it something that have never been done before and it was called Tops of the Pops from a former church that have been converted in to a TV Studio in Manchester, England.

The First band to appeared on the show was The Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, the Dave Clark Five, The Hollies, The Swinging Blue Jeans with and that week No.1 The Beatles with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" For 2,204 shows it took UK music fans a half Hours journey that took them thought Five Decade of music and style presented by the DJ at BBC radio one Alan Freeman, Pete Murray and David Jacobs,John Peel, David Jensen, Tony Blackburn, Richard Skinner, Dave Lee Travis, Janice Long, Gail Porter, Jamie Theakston, Fearne Cotton, Reggie Yates(i know you are ask other then John Peel i don't know the other DJ).

they hit there peak in 1975 where the show reach almost 15 million viewers a week and it survived the changed in music, as well as time changes From Thursday to Friday and then until the end on Sunday, a lot of reworking of the show if the changing of the logos was any indication. But they can not survived the Internet (i.e. we don't know how to program a music show.)

The writing was on the wall and the show ended on July 30 as Sir Jimmy Savile who started the show ended with the line he Coin "It's still number one, it still top of the Pops" as Sir Jimmy closed the light on a TV show forever(Unless they pull a Doctor who out of the hat)

So we Honor the TV show with a clips from long running TV Show.

Silversun Pickups
When i hear the SSPU i thought on no not a other Emo band that capther kids but after further listen and there Bass player( Nikki Monninger) remind me of all the cool female rockers in Chicago (the Dials, Missiassa of the Ponys, and The Cool females in the Bang, Bang!) they are wordly, there Debut album Carnavas was released in Late July on the every so small Dangerbird Records label and pick up steam with a lot of airplay on all the LA Station and on blog all it pick up seven PLUG awards noniess, and will be a cool band for years to come, but they could scerw up and become Painc at the Disco.

Gnarls Barkley

Take a mashing Producer and DJ mix it up with Soul rapper and you got a very succful band who rules the UK album chart with there debut "St. Elsewhere" which span off Crazy who reach no.1 on the UK Chart on Downloads alone and have a great live shows that would made Mr. Dressup (the Late Ernie Coombs) proud (in there live show they play dress up From Tennis Outfit to the Wizard of Oz to The E.R. wow they follow with the album that almost broke up the Band during recording but they pull thought in releasing "Show Your Bones" in March and not only that she still the most lovely female in all of rock n roll on stage and in person, and on a person note i even met the lovely Karen O the night after her band play the 89x birthday show at the state theater she when up I-75 to the Belmont to check out "The Sirerns" and she very cool and a very pretty and a wonderfully talker, and i I said this to Karen O (So If she this pleased don't get offend)if she was a local i would date her,but hey she awesome in every scent of the word, So Thank you Ben Blackwell for getting Karen O to a Live and Local show and meeting her.

5.
Tilly and the Wall
When i mention to Suzy Cole about my easy winner in one NME single of the week which is called Tilly and the Wall, she said i like the bands because there chicks in the band, yes there Chicks in the band who have a fun always spirited live show with a tap dancer instead of a drummer really fun live show that make you want to book the band during homecoming week(Ed Note: they played the stick on Home Coming week at Wayne state) there CD "Bottoms of Barrels" released in may is really fun to listen to by the Campfire.

The Oohlas
It From one of my fave out of left field band of the year this Los Angeles base Psychedelic Power pop band won me over as they go some play on LA Station Indie 103.1 and KCRW even before the released "Best Stop Pop" Back in September, Lead by the Ultra Cute Ollie Stone who have one of the most joyful vocal you every want to hear it will remind you of a hype up "Lush", Now if they only played a Detroit show.

3.
KT Tunstall
This year Grabeg lead by Scotist-woman Sheryl Manson when on Hiatus, well at least we found a subatuie in a pretty good live Songwriter, nobody at the begin of 2006 know who KT Tunstall was unless if you was a real music who follow the UK music Scene you still have no idea who KT Turnstall was unless you first hear her debut album on UK radio and that it was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005, but then one listen to her wonderful debut album "Eye to the Telescope" you would be asking what a wonderful album, i got to hear her live and she would win you over with a hrad driving - blue collar live show that would ask you when she be back in town.

KT Turnstall did it all that this year and have replace Sheryl Crow as there fave singer-songwriter would could put on a great live show by herself, with someone, or a full band she was great, I don't know how in the hell she was denied for best new artist Grammy.

Album released this year: Eye to the Telescope

2.
Cat Power
2006 was the turning point for solo performer called Cat Power, as she released her album called "The Greatest" which was love by criect, by fans and bloggers alike but it took a life changing detour as she went into rehab to teathment for alcoholism.

but unlike other trouble rockers before her she came back stronger than ever more wise and she know how to do a straight up live gig, this year she prove she is the greatest and not only that proved my highlight of 2006 after her gig at Tasetfest i lend he my Sharpie and she wrote almost a dozen autograph and not only that after she hand me back my sharpie, She compel surprise me by kissing me on the Check, Now that was some thing

Album released this year: The Greatest

she would be the No.1 of the year, but if it was not for a late night ride back home with Metro Times Techno writer Walter Wasaca i would not be talking about the crazy mix mash Indie Electronic Synth-pop band from Sweden, The Land of hockey and they give us Current red wings Captain Nicklas Lidström, this album that was released in Late July on Mute records and won over every one even if you was not a fan of Electronic Music.

The Top Band That Should Matter to you in 2006 is

1.
The Knife

Fronted by brother and sister duo Karin Dreijer Andersson and Olof Dreijer they been making there crazy electronic indie sound since 1999 after Karin other band the indie pop band Honey Is Cool broke up, there released two album on there own Label Rabid Records (2001 - The Knife and 2003 Deep Cuts) But they broke thought in 2006 with there third album Silent Shout with a more darker tone with song like the title track, "Marble House", "We Share Our Mother's Health" and "Like a Pen".

But it hard to come by the band because avoid the public spotlight by not taking photograph or doing live gig until late of the year when they played two show in NYC and Two Show in San Francisco, they put a bench mark on the music in 2006 until they put a pain in place for there Next album.

Album released this year: Silent Shout
