it Holiday time at 9 P.M.

and to continued the theme on the passing of John Lennon who sadly was taking for us 27 years ago on this day on December 8th, 1980

a X-mas song from the man himself

Happy Christmas (War Is Over)

It's 9 O'Clock

and today is December 8th a day nobody will never ever forget
as it was in this day in 1980 that John Lennon the man who was a part of 60's pop culture with the beatles and became a sussful solo singer and peace activist in the 70's was taken far too soon at the age of 40.

To this day his music and words still live with us to this day and to houner him on this day of remembering hime we play three video to remember him by to show what he is all about.

How 2007 teared you with

JRC, Editor of five three Dail tone.com [http://fivethreedialtone.com]

it time for the 2nd in a seriers of questionaired on the end of the year, now in part one in the year of reviews we have Jasper from Web Vomit who interduct there reader and this blogger to a brand new web site called fivethreedialtone.com, been on-line since Early May and this site give some good news and opinon about the music scene.

I ask JRC for his look back at 2007

and i always ask the 1st question:

How Did 2007 Treated you

2007 was pretty good. A lot of great stuff going on in Detroit and everywhere, even if it's under the radar.

What Crisis that is affecting the indie music scene in side the Detroit area.

Crisis? I don't think we have a crisis. We kind of got spoiled with the garage rock explosion that happened. Really, anyone who was around to see the rise of The White Stripes is really lucky. Most people don't get to see that kind of thing in their lives ever. We kind of expected it from every band in town after that. The only negative thing I can say about Detroit is that there are too many venues attempting to do local shows 6 nights a week. The same bands play over and over and over. It's taken me a pretty long time to figure out that I don't need to see the same bands on a monthly basis.

Same Question but What major Crisis is reallying Affecting the Indie Music Out Side the 313.

I don't think there is one. Any crisis seems to revolve around major labels. All the indie kids in bands just do their thing. Maybe gas prices qualify as a crisis. No one ever thinks about that for a touring band. Buy their merch, it really helps out!

Other then you own released if you where in a band, which local released you dig this year.

There's been a lot of good stuff.
The Muldoons ST record..
Deastro / Our Brother The Megazord double disc is disgustingly good.
The Go's new record, Howl On The Haunted Beat You Ride
Mas! - Next Lev
The Hard Lessons 2 EPs.. one isn't even out yet but it's The Hard Lessons, so it will be great.
I was gifted the Pop Project record, and I thought that was really good.
Wildcattings record as well..
I'm sure I'm missing a ton.. I'm horrible really, because I like everything.

Which album Outside the Michigan area that really sound cool in 2007.

There is a band from Nashville, Tennessee called The White Stripes. They put out a record called Icky Thump that was probably my favorite record of the year.

Which album, band or Event really let you down big time.

I don't really have super high expectations for anything. Of course there were things I didn't like, or maybe just didn't get. Why were all those people listening to Blitzen Trapper? I read all these glowing reviews, and it was some pretty bogus stuff. I'm not sure that's even the question.

Who did you love live and in person this year. [aka, best gig you saw this year]

The best gig I saw this year was Patrick Wolf at the Magic Bag. I can't really explain to anyone how great it was. I was on a date, and got to sit at a table, and it sounded great, and the energy was great. It was really everything you look for in a live show. That record is amazing, too. It came out this year.
Champions of Breakfast are up there as well. I still don't really know what I saw that day. I think they had a unicorn.

Which new band did you really love on the first listen or 1st live gig

Locally, it was Mas! and The Decks.. Deastro and remember Reptile Forcefield? That was great too.

If there was anything difference about the indie music scene in 2007 what would it be.

i think the support is definitely scattering. Here it seems we have 10 shows going on at once, all with 25 people at them. Of course the heavy hitters will never be affected by that, but a lot of small bands aren't being given the shots to open bigger shows. I'm not even sure that matters, since some of the best shows I saw this year were in a library in the Bohemian. I still think bands just play way too much. In my opinion, if you have more than 1 show every 6 weeks in the same state, you're playing too much. Your adoring 40 fans will understand, I promise.

What band that the rest of the music fans they have not hear of will be heard in 2008.

I wish I knew. I'm terrible at keeping current with music. Everyone loves to list of wildly obscure bands then asking me what I think about the record. 99% of the time I've never even heard of the band. Even established bands, i'm constantly missing their new records. Your website (itcamefromculturecity) has been extremely helpful in keeping me informed on new releases, so thanks!

And Finally What is your prediction for the indie music scene in 2008.

I don't make predictions. "more of the same" is usually a safe bet. As far as hopes and dreams, I would like Deastro to get famous and build me a castle. A castle made of chocolate. I also would like to have a block party

THE SEVENTH SEAL
Friday at 7 PM and 9:30 PM
(Sweden—1957—directed by Ingmar Bergman)

As the Black Death wipes out much of the population of Europe, a knight (Max von Sydow), recently returned from the Crusades, is confronted by the figure of Death. In hopes of extending his life, the knight challenges Death to a game of chess; the challenge is accepted, and Bergman’s magnificent visionary masterpiece is underway. The majesty and boldness of Bergman’s The Seventh Seal has only deepened during the half-century since its creation. Visually, and in terms of the profundity and universality of the themes that it confronts – faith, death, and the very meaning of existence – The Seventh Seal remains one of the most important works of art of the twentieth century, and one of the greatest and most hauntingly unforgettable films in the history of the medium. Presented in a stunning, newly struck 35mm print. Jury Prize, Cannes Film Festival. In Swedish with English

THE MAGICIAN
Saturday at 7 PM and 9:30 PM
(Sweden—1958—directed by Ingmar Bergman)

A traveling troupe of entertainers, led by the mysterious hypnotist and magician Dr. Vogler (Max von Sydow) ride through the night to 19th century Stockholm, where they will put on a private performance for a cynical medical officer who humiliated the troupe earlier. Part suspense film, part horror film and part metaphysical Gothic thriller, Bergman’s The Magician is also a portrait of con artistry worthy of David Mamet, as well as a tribute to, and a darkly sly parody of, the eternally seductive appeal of show business. As scary as much of The Magician is, Bergman himself referred to it as a comedy; that it’s both ironic and deeply funny at its core is undeniable, yet Bergman’s aforementioned categorization of this hair-raising work as “comedy” may tell us more about the great director himself than he realized. Special Jury Prize, Venice Film Festival. In Swedish with English subtitles.

THE MAGIC FLUTE
Sunday at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM
(Sweden—1975—directed by Ingmar Bergman)

Drawing equally on his experience in both theatre and movies, Bergman created one of the most purely joyous recreations of a theatrical event ever put on film with his 1975 adaptation of Mozart’s sublime opera. A playful, melodious and ingeniously staged work of pure pleasure, The Magic Flute’s simple, eloquent story – about a devoted young man determined to rescue the princess he loves – is miraculously ennobled in Bergman’s generous conception, which celebrates not only the love, redemption and faith of the characters, but is also an ode to the exhilarating power of theatre itself. For those who’ve only been exposed to the “darker” visions of some of Bergman’s other masterworks, The Magic Flute will come as a revelation – and it will be obvious why Bergman wrote that “making this film was the best time of my life.” In Swedish with English subtitles.

Culture City 2007 Questonaire

well it is December, and that mean [if you take away three days] where in the last 31days of the year 2007, it was the year of good live gig, good CD released, a few hic-up hear and there, a few good placed close, going to close, was off the air, or changes hand, it was a up and down year in regions that is still stugeing with the auto inserey in flux and everybody is asking what is next.

so thought out the last month of the year i will as best as i possable could in the chilly basement look back at the crazy year that was 2007.

as many of you readers who have read this web site know there is the grand finally of the entire year which is the 2nd annual Culture CIty Festive 50 for 2007 and the companion Festive 50 - Local 25 on the last full post of the year but that is not ready until the last week of the year.

so i decied to add a short 10 question "Questionnaire" to the mix i have send 19 friends that i know that promote music in this area and ask them to fill out the Questionnaire to be posted here, now of the 19 i send it to belev it or not only four have send back to this blog sight to put on this post.

Now for thouse of you who have gotten a questionnaire and have not fill it you can still do and sent it in at the blog site mail address on the right of the menu and to tell you the thurt even i filled out the Questionnaire myself before i sent out but you see it before i get to the festive 50.

so now let see who return the 1st of the questionnaire in asking the question

How did 2007 treated you with...

Japer - Editor of Web Vomit blog [http://jasper.webvomit.com/]

Either you like him or don't like him, next to my blog Jasper have one of the best site going today talking about the music scene inside and outside the 313 and some time can give some thing to talk too

all that pay off as he was awarded with the metrotimes best of Detroit awards for Best Web site/Blog Covering Local Music and to tell you the truth my man put a lot into his sight about Detroit music and put his two cent too.

now he just move so he fire back his questionnaire so we have to ask the question

How Did 2007 Treated you

Very well, thanks for asking.

What Crisis that is affecting the indie music scene in side the Detroit area.

Darfur

Same Question but What major Crisis is reallying Affecting the Indie Music Out Side the 313.

Gas prices

Other then you own released if you where in a band, which local released you dig this year.

Ghost City, Deastro, The Dead Bodies, Electric Six, Freer, The Go, Great Lakes Myth Society, PostPrior (was that this year?), The Hentchmen, Mas! and a bunch of others I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Which album Outside the Michigan area that really sound cool in 2007.

Animal Collective, Of Monteal, !!!, Yeasayer, We Are Wolves, The Narrator, The Veils, White Rabbits, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Modest Mouse, Queens of the Stone Age

Which album, band or Event really let you down big time.

The new Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party and Interpol albums were big disappointments. And The White Stripes cancelling their Chicago shows and retiring to sell merch. or whatever it is they're doing, was a bummer.

who did you love live and in person this year. [aka, best gig you saw this year]

Tough question. I see too many shows to remember even half of them. The one that stands out this moment was Patrick Wolf because I wasn't expecting anything that great but he really impressed me.

Which new band did you really love on the first listen or 1st live gig

Jaguar Love on first listen. Champions of Breakfast on first live performance.

If there was anything difference about the indie music scene in 2007 what would it be.

More bands with "wolf" in their name

What band that the rest of the music fans they have not hear of will be heard in 2008.

Jaguar Love

And Finally What is your prediction for the indie music scene in 2008.

More bands leaving major lables to go "indie".

The Live Review

Peter, Bjorn and John
The Majestic Theater
Midtown Detroit
December 1st

Well, i have to give prop to the Detroit music fans on the worst night of the year to go out to see a gig, the area was sock with the first big snow storm of the year the hard core music fan did not want to stay home and miss on of the biggest band of 2007 and the weather fit perfectly with the band that was playing on stage Saturday night.

it was the Swedish band "Peter, Bjorn and John" making a Detroit stop for all there fans here at Detroit rock city to listen to song from there awesome album "Writer Block" and they come on the wright time with the wright weather and a good vibe at the m-stick.

and i know you are mostly stick and tired of listen to there international fun song "Young Folks" in Commerical, Film Soundtracks, and other form of TV, but there live set was a very great fun set that show case the other song on the album as well as there 1st released "Falling Out".

they started out with the very good songs "Let's called it off" and other songs like "Amsterdam" and "Object of my affection", They do good tight live set and the crowd really like it, Oh yes they did play that song the "Young Floks" with the very guest female vocals Olga Goreas the base player for the very cool band "The Besnard Lakes" who open for them doing the female vocals on the song made famous by Ex-Concretes Victoria Bergsman.

The song is very well done live in concert and not only that the male - female part was so gear to hear and they so great live and at one point peter stop the song mid-steam to the delight of the crowd.

after there main set ended after about a hour it look like the night was over and done with and going back with snow road back home, but oh no they did a very good five to seven minutes version of "Up against the wall" and the guys have fun with the front of the crowd even on the edge of the stage in front of the speakers have in a good time.

The opening band, the Montreal base band "The Besnard Lakes" was and they were very good show as they show up in a cloud of smoke and they played tracks from there 2007Polaris Music Prize nominated "The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse" and they have a real god sound as they remind me of a low key version of "The Dears" Who are also From Montreal.

the band was fun to listen to with there great vocal from husband and wife team of Jace Lasek and Olga Goreas[who sings the female part of "the Young Floks"]they did entertain the the crowd who brave the roads of Detroit who made out.

it was great to see that the real music fans made it out there Gig to see the group under the worst of condition to see a wonderful band and go home in what left of the worst of contion and hitting back playing "Writer Block".

Thriller: Michael Jackson's Masterpiece

Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJ Trevor Nelson tells the story of Michael Jackson's classic album Thriller.

In December 1982, two of the music industry's biggest stars - artist Michael Jackson and producer Quincy Jones - came together to produce what would become the biggest-selling album in history.

The album would turn Jackson into the world's biggest superstar and the elaborate, accompanying music videos would become a world-wide phenomenon.

Twenty-five years after this album first went on sale, Trevor Nelson discovers how the album tracks came to be, what role MTV played in the process and how it all nearly fell apart.

This special programme features all nine album tracks and exclusive interviews with Quincy Jones, MTV founder Bob Pittman and Moonwalker Jeffery Daniel.
