DETOUR Rock City Festival Review

DAY TWO
June 13, 2008

A great Night for live "Bondies"

Well it was a really nice night in Mid-town, procing one thisng not to thurst a weatherman remember they say it was going to rain, but i went back to the stick center for night number two of the DETOUR Rock City Festival, with one of the most talk about band of the entire feat, whether you love the band or not like the band, they return for 1st in almost four years "The Von Bondies.

Now a lot have change in about four since they last played the Detroit metro area, the band no longer have Marcie bolen, or yaz smith or to a degree Carrie Smith who i still miss dearly, and a few member in between, The Von Bondies played a great set may mostly of there older set from there long set and i got to tell you they play a really good set and boy i got tell you it was great and not only that loud.

The Band played thur set like "Come On, Come On", "Going Down", "Been Swank", "Not That Social", "Tell Me What You See", and oh yes the inspirational of the naming this blog sight "It Came From Culture City" the song from "Lack of Communication" the Song "It Came From Japan", all the song was great, as they rip thought there :45 Minutes set.

My imprecision of there two current members were very good Lenna banks[Who play in "The Sirens" and "Ghost City"] look very pretty ever since she was in Ghost City and she look great up there, also Minneapolis transplant Christy Hunt is also a good Guitar play and not only that is very beautiful as well.

Front Man Jason Stollsteimer [who was sporting a summer cut]have not lost that fire since the last time they played here, he a great singer who still have something to prove, Now if there was one complaint was a time they were rusty and sometime they were off mostly with female duo vocals but i have to remember it a different line-up .

The rest of the night of Night Two, was impress with two out of town bands, Cincinnati Low-fi band "Bad Veins" was real good there sound was low-fi at best down 75 with the Synth and drums and all that with the effet of the old 70's Recorder Reels.

Also i was impress by D.C. band "APES" which was very great to listen to and fun to watch a little bit hardcore Psychedelic Rock which is a little dramatic as they play thought.

i did see a few local bands play rock City, i Did see "Beard of Bees" which was good , saw the "Display for the 1st time since last year play at the stick they was bump up after "TIGERCITY" have trouble getting home from Chicago.

and i saw This week "Real Detroit Weekly" Cover stars "Terrible Twos" and they were great a one of those messy rock group who fill a crowd and there girl friend, and i also catch the second half of Detroit Beloved atl-Country band Pas/Cal who is still great.

the worst part writing this report i only have a little time because the third and final day of the DETOUR Rock City Fest begin at 1 PM with the Day Party gig/ BBQ at the C.A.I.D. and it will be held during the day don't worried about swat team coming by.

Breaking Culture News

Tim Russert 1950-2008

I am about to go to night two of the DETOUR Rock City Fest, i want to post this note of a very sad, sad passing.

Tim Russert NBC Washington bureau chief and moderator of NBC's long running News program "Meet the Press [FYI: Longest serving host - 17 years] die this afternoon of an apparent heart attack, he was 58 years

This November eletions will not be the same with out him
Rest in Peace

and AP Story below.

NBC's Tim Russert dies at 58 after collapsing
By DAVID ESPO and LAURIE KELLMAN
AP Special Correspondent

WASHINGTON - Tim Russert, who pointedly but politely questioned hundreds of the powerful and influential as moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press," died suddenly Friday while preparing for his weekly broadcast. The network's Washington bureau chief was 58.

In addition to his weekly program, Russert appeared on the network's other news shows, was moderator for numerous political debates and wrote two best-selling books.

President Bush, informed of Russert's death while at dinner in Paris, swiftly issued a statement of condolence that praised the NBC newsman as "an institution in both news and politics for more than two decades. Tim was a tough and hardworking newsman. He was always well-informed and thorough in his interviews. And he was as gregarious off the set as he was prepared on it."

NBC interrupted its regular programming with news of Russert's death and continued for several hours of coverage without commercial break. The network announced that Tom Brokaw will anchor a special edition of "Meet the Press" on Sunday, dedicated to Russert.

Competitors and friends jumped in with superlative praise and sad recognition of the loss of a key voice during a historic presidential election year. Personally, Russert was a family man and a father figure to his colleagues. Parenting organizations several times had named him Father of the Year.

Familiar faces such as Brokaw, Andrea Mitchell and Brian Williams took turns mourning his loss.

"Our hearts are broken," said Mitchell, who appeared emotional at times as she recalled her longtime colleague.

Bob Schieffer, Russert's competitor on CBS' "Face the Nation," said the two men delighted in scooping each other.

"When you slipped one past ol' Russert," he said. "You felt as though you had hit a home run off the best pitcher in the league. I just loved Tim and I will miss him more than I can say."

The cause of death was not immediately clear. The network initially said on its Web site that Russert died of a heart attack. Michael A. Newman, Russert's internist, later said that resuscitation was begun immediately and continued at Sibley Memorial Hospital, to no avail. An autopsy was pending, Newman said.

Russert, of Buffalo, N.Y., took the helm of the Sunday news show in December 1991 and turned it into the nation's most widely watched program of its type. His signature trait there was an unrelenting style of questioning that made some politicians reluctant to appear, yet confident that they could claim extra credibility if they survived his grilling intact.

He was also a senior vice president at NBC, and this year, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Russert had Buffalo's blue-collar roots, a Jesuit education, a law degree and a Democratic pedigree that came from his turn as an aide to the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York.

One of his books, "Big Russ and Me," was about his relationship with his father.

On Sunday's program, Russert was to have interviewed Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a national co-chair of the McCain campaign, and Joe Biden, D-Del., an Obama supporter, in a debate format as surrogates for the two presidential candidates. The network said plans for Sunday's show were now uncertain.

Praise flowed quickly from those who knew Russert across the television interview room.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Russert was "the best in the business at keeping his interview subjects honest."

"There wasn't a better interviewer in television," Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential contender, told reporters in Ohio.

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, Obama's rival for the White House, hailed Russert as the "pre-eminent journalist of his generation."

Rep. John Boehner of Ohio, the House Republican leader, said Russert was "one of the smartest, toughest television news journalists of all time. ... I can say from experience that joining Tim on 'Meet the Press' was one of the greatest tests any public official could face."

Carl P. Leubsdorf, president of the Gridiron Club, an organization of journalists, said in a statement, "It was a measure of the degree to which Tim Russert was respected in the journalistic world that he was the first broadcaster elected to membership in the Gridiron Club after the rules were changed in 2004 to end our century-old restriction to print journalists."

"He was an enthusiastic member and a willing participant in our shows. His fellow Gridiron members join with all of those who knew and respected Tim in mourning his untimely death."

"It is my sad duty to report this afternoon" that Russert collapsed and died while working in the network's Washington studios, Brokaw said when he came on the air.

"He'll be missed as he was loved — greatly," Brokaw said.

The network said on its Web site that Russert had been recording voiceovers for this Sunday's "Meet The Press" when he was stricken.

Russert had dozens of honorary college degrees, and numerous professional awards.

He won an Emmy for his role in the coverage of President Ronald Reagan's funeral in 2004.

He was married to Maureen Orth, a writer for Vanity Fair magazine. The couple had one son, Luke.

DETOUR Rock City Festival Review

DAY ONE
Tuesday, June 12th

Yeah, Yeah on My Left Foot

Last night, was a really fun time the the stick complex for day one of the DETOUR Festival at the Stick Complex in Midtown Detroit, i got there at about 8:30 PM and was excited to see a number of bands i have not seen, have not seen in a long time and one band in that i fell in love late in 06

but it last night headliner at Local Web zine DETOUR second ever live event "the Rock City Festival" meet all expectation as the Fun Loving keyboard and drums duo from Brooklyn Matt & Kim rock out a crazy set of tunes from there crazy From there self-title 2006 debut album.

They come out doing there own version of Europe "The Final Countdown"[the same song you have heard thousand of times at the begin of the Detroit Piston Game] and then gave a great :30 to :40 set of crazy keyboard sounds with the very intense drumming
as they give there geeky song including there well know song yeah, yeah.

after there set Matt came down and even hug the crowd for showing up because there was nice to almost everybody the crowd, the DETOUR Staff, the stick crew even me as they love playing to a pretty much small crowd, But the show was a very good time

Also one of the fun highlight was was the return of the Hardest working band next to "the Dirtbombs" was "The Hard Lesson", i have not seen the band since there post X-mas gig at St. Andrew Hall back in December and i have seen the band almost 20 time in the last five years, but the band played even with there Drummer "the Anvil" played hurt.

A few weeks ago he broke his drumming foot wheid biking but he tough is out by switing to he other foot.[His left foot]there was no defenced in the band sound, he did fell a little bit of pain but he was to coin the term of one of there song "Felling Alright"

also i saw one of the friend of the this blog sight Thunderbirds Are Now!, they have not played in a long time, with lead singer Ryan Allen doing his other band "Friendly Foes" and his day job, played a real good set near the end of his set he and the rest of his friend dance with some member shirt-less

Also one of the highlight of the September launch gig Juiceboxxx also played a great set aldought it was total crazy like it was during his gig on September he did put on the show, did not run around all over the stage but he did give a good prefromance as he kick out the vibe

also some of the other highlight were for the local indie noise scene well respersented Marco Polio And The New Vaccines was great on the bowling Alley stage, Surband sprawl band "Javelins" sure did impress me, there sound were very good, also was one of last year rising band "Deastro" was also great and only catch the last two set from our own boys S.S.M.

Also i did catch the 1st play to played Local hip-hop person "Breezee One" she was OK it was her one of her dancer and yes the drummers. but did OK

as for the crowd for a Thursday it was so-so to O.K. some of the act were half-full to some of them small, but tonight it day No. 2 and the big act of the night with "The Von Bondies" playing there first big show inside the 313 in almost four year. should be fun.

Buy the time i post this

From DETOUR Magazine 2nd multi-day music fest

at the still recovering Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit [AKA after about a week of free pub "The C.A.I.D."] located at 5141 Rosa Parks Blvd. between Brany and putman st., just two block from Wayne State U.

The festival was going to held in march but somebody told it was a the same time as the metrotimes blowout so it was move to early summer and from the look at the line up, it look like a good choice to held the fest in summer where all three days are anchor by great headlining act all three nights.

the most talk surrounding the headliner act for Saturday night when Halifax own brother of Indie pop "Sloan" now this will get a lot for people from across the boarder from Windsor as they play there new song from there new album "Parallel Play" and they will take Windsor and Detroit in the motor City.

Also headliner on Friday Night playing at there first Detroit gig in almost four years a very difference looking "Von Bondies" as they ramp up for the long await follow up "Love, hate and then you", It still Jason and Don but join this time by former Sirens bassist Leann Banks, and guitarist Christy Hunt from Indianapolis.

the big question is how will Detroit react to the band that will be a big question, it should be a great act to see.

and also a band that i have been waiting since i learn about them at the end of 2006 and they sink in the 1st ever festive 50 the fun loving boyfriend and girlfriend duo from Brooklyn,NY "Matt and Kim", i have hear of "Yea, Yeah" for months when i first hear them and can't wait to put on a fun loving show.

Punk rock motor City Style as this fast rising band who been feather in Metrotimes and is on the Cover or Real Detroit Weekly, and they are going to rock and roll until the police shut it down.

The Culture City Live Review

Kristen Hersh
"Paradoxical Undressing"
Detroit Film Theater
Inside the Detroit Institute of Arts[D.I.A.]
June 6, 2008

The Motto of the DIA since the total reopening of the remodel D.I.A. back in October was "Let yourself go", and that what i saw last Friday night in midtown Detroit where the Detroit Festival of the arts just got started and i got there to see for the very first time the legion singer/song wirer of one of the 90 best band "Throwing Muses" the one and only Kristen Hersh.

But, this was not your Regular gig by miss Hersh, and this was not you run of the mill gig[which was part of the Detroit Festival of the arts], i was a living moving sound art, live gig and spoken word event att quiet roll in to one beautifully show with just her, her guitar, her amp a readign stand and the stage.

she did two show and when i came in it was dark as she was reading story from her upcoming memoir called "Paradoxical Undressing" as she read her story she play a really good guitar at the same time as there was beautiful back drop af art work by Molly Cliff Hilts which was lovely that fit the performance with colorful landscaped.

the range of subject she read that included mental illness, teenage pregnancy and the wear and tare of the Boston music scene in the late 80's and early 90's, i fave highlights were her story of 4AD as Ivo Watts-Russell was trying to reach the band to become the 1st America band to be on 4AD and also she told the funny story of her flying after a bad Crash as she fly before meeting the pavement.

in between story the lights dim so Kristen rip up a lot of "Throwing Muses" songs and it was really good to hear with her gritty voals we all know a love and long time fans really hook on to.

overall this was a really great show, nothing special it was a south born and New England Raised old school indie rockers telling story under a beautiful sonic backdrop and great vibe all around.

Don't Start Me Talking About... The Beatles

Friday - 2 PM EDT

This latest addition to BBC Radio 2's popular oral history series tells the story of The Beatles in the words of their fans.

John, Paul, George and Ringo changed the world, but did they change our lives and our attitudes to sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll?

We hear from the band's earliest fans and from those who were swept up in the tide of Beatlemania that washed over the world in the 1960s.

This programme, which is part of BBC Radio 2's Liverpool Season, offers a unique insight into the way the Fab Four impacted on the everyday and the commonplace - the answers you'll hear may surprise you!

Harlem: Remembering Bo Diddley!
Wednesday Midnight – The '50s - XM 5

This week Harlem pays respect to the true originator of rock n' roll, Bo Diddley. When Ellas McDaniel burst on the scene as Bo Diddley in 1955, he took the entire world by surprise. No one looked or sounded like that in the mid 1950s. Matt The Cat tells Bo's story and plays some Diddley classics you?ve never heard before, such as the original "Love Is Strange," which was written and originally recorded by Bo (a year before Mickey & Sylvia would have a #1 hit with it). Let's remember Bo for what he was; a creator, a trailblazer and a man who wasn't afraid to be himself and sound different. We get behind the beat, this week on Harlem
