Breaking Culture City News

this is No Joke
A Monster Mealt Band have won
The Eurovision Song Contest
No Joking

I know this is held in the Europe and i know most people don't care, but there prove the old saying anything could happen in music.

The Finnish Metal band Lordi have won the 51th Eurovision song contest in Athens, Greece it beat out 23 other worst pop act you would never want to hear ok expect one or two songs this year with a record 292 outpaceing the runner up Russia 44 points,Bosnia Herzegovina finish 3rd, round up the top 10:Romania,Sweden,Lithuania,Ukraine,Armenia,Greece,Ireland, The UK best entry(and i know you don't care) Daz Simpson with a good tune "this Teenage Life" finishes 19th out of 24th

Normal the winner song would be some over-produce cheesey rock song, But this year winner hold carp that scream the headlines: Lordi, Lordi, Lordi, What have you done?. What have they done is they brought Next year Eurovision Song contest to the Finnish captial of Helsiki.

It the Weekend and there will be cheese on The Radio

Well welcome to the weekend and if you know anything about the weekend on the latest dister filck on TV 10.5 Apocalypse on NBC ouch!, no good show this weekend and playing catch up to my blog and sorry no rehash of the DMA like you want to know but may be a Culture City Extra (Not a reg. post) have not listen to the three NME Single of the week and i may miss game six of pistons game with Cleveland because a play at the planet ant is ending this week end (Cancer, The Musical) and wrost i dont know if the pistons can pull it off tonight in Cleveland (Win in CLV tonight and game 7 back in DET sunday afternoon) and i got a weekend update to do in lue of the america Idol final (Which i am not following, but may watch a total of three hours of bad karoke to become a star.) and the debut of the indoors and outdoors gig guide on late sunday for monday, and in the Middle of this yes and for the 1sy time live on the internet The ultermant Cheese Music Fest The Eurovision Song Contest, Which i get to later.

The Big Story that may upset some fans who used to listen to WDET-FM. a good mole broke the story to me last night at the DMA at State last night, posted on this sight early this moring and confrim by a story in today detroit News. Michical Coleman Yesterday plead No Contest Thursday to an embezzlement charge stemming from his former post at Michigan Public Media in Ann Arbor. Coleman is charged with one count of misdemeanor embezzlement of at least $1,000 and less than $20,000 for allegedly illegally accepting meals and other perks while he was deputy director of Michigan Public Media, the parent of the University of Michigan's radio and TV stations, including Ann Arbor's WUOM-FM 91.7, But my source told me it may be a reduce Charge. Coleman will be sentenced June 22 before Washtenaw County Trial Court Judge David Swartz. He could face five years in prison, a fine of $10,000 or three times the amount embezzled Wayne State University interim executive vice president Louis Lessem said in a statment "It's welcome news that Michael has successfully resolved this situation with the University of Michigan," "We are looking forward to continuing the momentum we are seeing at WDET under Michael's leadership." He is the 2nd Ex-official to pela deal in the fundrasing scandel at WUOM, On April 12 Justin Ebright who used to work as development director at WUOM-FM pela gulity to the same embezzlement Charge in exchange a charge of conspiracy to embezzle was dropped exchange for his testimony against Coleman and Jeremy Nordquist who is the only other who is still charge with embezzlement an will be bound over for trial.

The Whole fundrasier scanal have come at a bad time at WDET-FM over the last five mouths as a result over the force resing of Long time daytime DJ Martin Bandyke and a month later the station AX the Daytime Music programing in favor for NPR produce stuff like NPR News and Note with Ed Gordon,Democracy Now, Here and Now, BBC World, Have your say, and day to day restore Fresh Air with terry Gross and a bunch of weekend program and ax music host Judy Adams, Willie Willson and John Penny, The listen pulbic was not happy and it show in listeners and donor who used to listen DET the last fundrasier was a distaster with the station loseing almost 31% of listern and loseing more donors as they fell far short of there $600,000 goal rasing a $432,000, But the big queston is: Is WDET-FM Better as a music Station with news in the Mix or a News Station with with little or no music, according to a story in yesterday Detroit News In the winter Book (Jan,Feb,Mar)form Arbitron, The station have More listern then in the Fall 2005 book(Oct,Nov,Dec) by 12,000 listeners (161,000 WB06 vs 149,000 FB05) also what they did not tell you that the Super Bowl was in town in feburay and not only it increse Nuberburs at DET, But also WJR-AM(760),WWJ-TV(950), and the two all sports stationWDFN-AM(1130) and WXYT-AM(1270) This is a passion debate that still rage on the massage Boards here what are they saying on the blog:

I try to listen to the news and it just drove me nuts, especially the pace the first woman was speaking.
I don't think the spring pledge drive was a success; it was longer and think raised less money. I was insulted by some of the remarks made by some of the hosts.

I also hear that we can expect another on-air fundraiser in June! Yeah, bet that'll go over well.. Coleman sure seems to be f***ing that place up good!

Coleman and the others in charge have completely ruined one of Detroit's finest institutions. Its a tragedy

Heck, I still turn off Ed Love - I love blues and jazz but I can not stand Ed Love as a host.

Wayne State is getting the radio station it deserves. And if you are a listener or donor feel free to thank Irv Reid, Steve Brown (WSU Marketing Genius), and their mole on the inside Marla Stone. Also, outside consultant Harvey Ovshinsky. I'm sure his check still clears while Jon Moshier and the rest looking for new jobs

First of all, the Martin and Judy story has never been fully disclosed. Somebody ought to use the freedom of information act and pull their personnel records (Wayne State is a public institution). My understanding is, they made Coleman's charges look like child's play.

And I'll add Coleman has backed away from committments to bloster the local news staff. So along with a progressive music format, Coleman has also turned it's back on Detroit-based news.

"I used to like working here, now it is just a paycheck until something better comes along."

kay, some heavy allegations are being made. As I understand some of the innuendo Judy Adams and Martin Bandyke had been embezzling funds as well, but "The Wayne" was trying to sweep it under the rug. I guess what it comes down to is do we keep the crooks we appreciate, or the new one we don't like.

Last I checked, accepting free concert tickets wasn't a crime. It is, however, against Wayne State policy and therefore Martin was asked to resign.

I've always said that WSU wanted WDET to fail, so they could sell the station. It's in a prime spot on the dial.

I immediatly purchased an XM radio. I can listen to NPR stuff on 97.1. (I did miss This American Life and Fresh Air when DET took them off. A good mix of music and news is necessary, I think.) I miss the local sound, tho.

First of all, It amazes me that Wayne continues to support Coleman like they do. In my business, if the CEO pleads no contest to embezzlement charges at his former employer, he's fired. And WDET relies on donations! Even if I didn't stop supporting them when the music was gutted, I sure wouldn't now! it's crazy! And If I were an underwriter, I'd give it serious question as well.

I never Listened to Judy Adams...Tangerine Dream? Puh-leeze.Has anyone noticed that the live music available since DET is gone, has slipped? I haven't seen any thing I want to go see. Maybe "Springsteen does Seeger" at DTE but,I won't pay 100 bucks for that ticket. I'm not really into the lawn atmosphere but those tix are only $25.

to read the full message youself you can view you self at http://detroit.metblogs.com/ or you can join the consersaytion here.

And Speaking about Radio, Last Night i saw willie wilson Ex-wdet DJ and Magic Stick PublicistWilly Wilson at the Detroit Music awards and he told me that he will be subing for The Roots Music Project Next Saturday, May 27 at 2PM and will be for that day only you can ear the show on the Sation web sight at wemu.org

And in other news in a around the detroit area like i say i was at the detroit Music awards and i will have a full report in a Culture City Extra so to ease the pain here a full winner list where you also see the ful winner list at the Detroit Music Awards Web sight at detroitmusicawards.com

From CMJ.com

According to a posting on her MySpace page, MIA is exactly that. Well, sort of. The Sri-Lankan born, British art rapper who signed to Interscope last spring was due in the US last month to start work with producer Timbaland on the follow up to her breakthrough debut Arular, but was denied a visa to work or visit the States. MIA wrote on her MySpace blog: “the U.S immigration wont let me in!!!!! i was mennu work with timber startin this week… im locked out! they wont let me in! Now Im strictly making my album outside the borders!!!! so il see you all one day, for now ill keep reportin from the sidelines.” There is no word on why MIA (né Maya Arulpragasam) was denied entry, but NME is reporting that her lawyers are currently trying to sort the situation out.

The Sounds—have announced that they will join this summer's Vans-sponsored Warped Tour. The tour begins July 18 in Vancouver and concludes August 13 in Montreal, resulting in a sort of mutated bell curve spanning the States for those following along with an Atlas. The band will be cranking out their meteoric brand of bouyant indie rock from the Warped Main Stage in support of their latest release, Dying To Say This To You. (and yes it do inclule the Big gig at the fox town area on July 2)

WDET-FM GM to plea gulty to a lesser Charge
in The WUOM Fundrasieing Scandel

This a late Breaking News story i got from a good and trushed Mole at tonight Detroit Music Awards in Downtown Detroit this good mole toll me that embattle WDET-FM GM Michael Coleman will Plead Gulty to lesser charges in the Fund Rasing Scandel at his old Job at WUOM-FM. What that charges he plea gulty to we dont know also the Same mole also tell me that After he plea gulty to the lesser charge in Ann Arbor, Wayne State University will put out a press release say "Wayne State University and WDET-FM would well come Back Michael Coleman with open Arms"

Michael Coleman and two other was charge on March 16 with with embezzlement of under $20,000 for allegedly taking food, airline tickets and lodging in exchange for on-air announcements while working at Michigan Public Media-controlled WUOM-FM (91.7).

Wanye State Universtiy have stood by coleman this entire time

Coleman Who took the job at WDET-FM in Auguset of 2005 have turn off a lot of listern since he made controversial programming changes on Decmber 12, 2005 when he dump Daytime Music Programing in favor of more NPR programing and let go of Long time DJ Martin Bandyke, Judy Adams, Willie Willson and John Penny, He also expand Jazz DJ Ed love show from 3 hours to 5 hours (7pm-Midnight) and also bought back a lot of programing from Bad programing Switch No one in late 2004(including Fresh Air with Terry Gross)

But the Changes have turn off long time listerns a have seen a drop off 31% listenship which also saw pleged at WDET-FM also drop off to $430,000 far far short of there $600,000

once aging all of this on the top of the report is all for my mole
well see tomorrow

more on the The Raconteurs A2 tour stop

found a little more info on the The raconteurs tour stop in Ann Arbor it will take place on August 5 a Saturday Night doors open at 7:30 pm and the price of the tickets will be $35 bucks and that go on sale tomorrow at 10 AM at LiveNation.com or at ticketmaster.com.

and more Raconteurs Reviews

The South End(Wanye State U. Student Newspaper):
It sounds like what you'd expect from White and Benson. It's got that early-White Stripes vintage rock feel, calmed down a bit by Benson's pop influence. Keeler's drums aren't much more complex than Meg White's but, perhaps, a bit more technically sound.

The U Weekly(Ohio State U Stuent Newspaper): From “Steady, As She Goes” on through the stunning climactic slow-burner “Blue Veins,” the Raconteurs maintain a consistency that is all too rare in alternative rock these days

Real Detroit Weekly: The album's okay, but given its pedigree, I was expecting more. (3 stars out of 5)

Now Note from the Indie World:

Thhe Racounteus will also playing the Austin City Limtis Festival in austin,TX with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, the Flaming Lips, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, and Willie Nelson, Van Morrison, the Shins, Feist, Stars, Sparklehorse, Wolf Parade, Secret Machines, Gnarls Barkley, Cat Power and the Memphis Rhythm Band, Jos頇onzᬥz, the New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Okkervil River, Iron & Wine, Calexico, Son Volt, Los Lonely Boys the Festival take place on Sept. 15-17 but if you can't go on june 20 the 2cd/2dvd set of last year austin City Littis fest. with Jet, Allman Brothers Band, the Bravery, Thievery Corporation, the Black Keys, Kasabian, Bloc Party, the Frames, Kaiser Chiefs, Blues Traveler, Ambulance LTD, Eisley, the Decemberists, Jason Mraz, Mike Doughty, Aqualung, Keane, Rachael Yamagata, Robert Earl Keen, Steve Earle Keen, Steve Earle and the Dukes, Gov't Mule, John Prine, John Butler Trio, and Widespread Panic.

Antheror Band have there Gear stolen, The Swedish dream-poppers the Concretes who in tour in surport of there new CD "In colour" Have there Gear Rip-off in NYC steal there gitars, a organ, and a euphonium, on there web sight they say "That means stealing a major part of our sound and it sucks so hard and we are really quite fucking upset about it. If you are offered a really sweet deal on some vintage instruments in the NY-area then please first check against these serial numbers. In case of a match, report to us and give the seller a good punch in the face."

They join a long line of bands There Gear Stolen jointhe like of [() - the city the gear was stolen]
Matt Pond's(New York City), Film School (Phily), Rosie O'Thomas (Phily), Ambulettle (Phily), and the Duke Spirit(Porland, OR)

Broken Boy Soliders
The 1st Reviews are in.

I can not pass up that today is New Music Tuesday and the Most eager awaited (depend who you talk too) Side project or New Full time Bands from the Lead Singer of the White Stipes Jack White, The Raconteurs' "Broken Boys Solider" it in the indie Store (you Should Support them you know) and big box store as well. The Band consit of Detroit Native Jack White, Solo Singer Brendan Benson, Greenhornes Bassed Jack Lawrence(Who also playin Blance) and Drummer Patrick Keeler(also from the Greenhornes), The Alumble was record in 2005 before and during breakin touring with Jack Primer Band The Write Stirpes on a world Wide tour to push there 5th alblum Get behind me satan" the alublm which i been told by some trusht Moles told me the alblum is very good to really awsome, We 1st song from the new CD was relese in Januray of this year with Limited release of a 1000 copies in both the UK and the US of "Steady, As She Goes" With a good video to boot Which was direct by indie film Mavrick Jim Jarmusch and now after months of talk and pre press hyped is the alblum any good i search the internet for the 1st reviews.

The Detroit News: It's good to hear White -- who, make no mistake, is still a full-fledged White Stripe -- having fun and loosening up.(B)

The Boston Globe: No matter the source or the style, each track is varnished in a psychedelic glaze that works like glue -- bonding the arena rawker ''Hands" to the roiling British Invasion showpiece ''Intimate Secretary" and prog-stomper ''Store Bought Bones" to the languorous waltz ''Blue Veins."

The Tech(M.I.T. Student News Paper):With only ten tracks to gather an opinion from, it’s still impressive how smoothly Jack White dovetails with his band-mates and takes to his new role. The more worthwhile achievement of the Raconteurs, however, is in proving that classic rock still has a torch worth carrying.

LA Times: That's what the Raconteurs are to White so far — a great place for him to refine his hand.(4 Stars)

USA Today: The foursome generates more enthusiasm than originality in pop-powered tunes that revisit the prog-rock, metal and psychedelic realms of bands from Led Zeppelin to Boston and Free. Whereas the Stripes crib from early blues giants, The Raconteurs find themselves in cheesier company, or specifically, Bad Company, copping liberally from B-list 8-tracks of the '70s.(3 stars out of 4)

NME - New Music Express: The Point Begin this: The Raconteurs are, right now, an entertaning idea and everything, nut that's about it. Fun for them, a guaranteed money-spinner, but when it come downto it, it ain't gonna change youw world any. Not quite a rich man' fooly, but close (6 out of 10)

NY NewsDay: The single "Steady as She Goes" seems to back that up, with the off-kilter harmonies of Benson and White bouncing off the Joe Jackson-inspired bass line and the guitar roar. It's easy to see how they knocked out this song and decided to pursue an entire album.

Boston Hearld: The collision of avant-blues-rock mad genius and meticulous power-pop craftsman in this side project quartet results in “Broken Boy Soldiers,” a heady stew of psychedelic pop with a heavy dose of classic rock nostalgia. (B+)

NY Post: Don't be concerned about the album's rampant musical kleptomania. White and his partner in crime - songsmith Brendan Benson - have borrowed riffs and beats, taken them to the chop shop and rearranged them into something familiar, yet original. The disc is a tight 10 songs, and there isn't a dud in the batch.(4 stars)

The London Evening Standerd: The closing Blue Veins, as the title suggests, is one of those eerie modern blues that White excels in, but the honours are so even here, it could just as easily have been written by Benson. God, what a lovely racket! (4 stars)

Pitchfork.com: Yet, as already established, forced perspective makes even these small steps appear as significant strides for Mr. White.(7.4)

From most of the review i read so far the CD is good most of the reviews i read like the Harmoy between Jack and Breaden and even compair it to 60 pop and 70 arena Rock, But most were mix on the lenght of the alblum clocking in at less than 34 min. but most of the review are good.

And The Raconteurs will go on a summer tour and yes that do have a detroit Date a detroit date in Ann Arbor, The Band will go on tour for Three weeks beging on June 16 in Denver and finsh in Cleveland on Auguest 6, and the Next to last date is detroit but if you want to see Them you have to Drive drive I-96 to the M-14 to see them in Ann Arbor, Yes friend there not playing the Madsonic Themple near downtown, But 43 Miles west in Ann Arbor at the Michigan Theater on Auguest 5th Tickets go on This Friday at 10 AM but i tried to see how much ticket cost but could not find it, but tomorrow is Metrotimes and real detroit Weekly is out well give you more infomation.

well jack told the world why he left Detroit is the New issues of Spin now in the new GQ, Brendan Benson told why he also move out of Detroit but for far ugly reason, He was attack eatlier this year at a gas station, a robber KO him with a trie iron and took his Wallet and Cell Phone, i tool up to 11 sticeds to close up the wound but still suffers headaches and has trouble concentrating. and after that it was over. “I just felt like, you know what, I can’t champion (Detroit) anymore.” I hoped Kmean is not reading GQ Next Mouth.

Now on to day News and your going to be upset if you a local hard core punks Fans. Accroding to Punknews.org and posted on motorcityrocks.com Late this afternoon that the local Punks Legons the Suicide Machines have Called it a day after 15 Years here a the Full pre-pair Statment from PunkNews.org:

"Yes - the Suicide Machines have indeed disbanded and will no longer be playing shows. We originally had planned on calling it a day at the end of 2005 - but some great offers for tours came in late last year that we just could not turn down so we decided to take them and keep it going. Things just got to a point recently of where we could no longer continue doing this band although we had planned on trying to stay with it until the end of this year.

Jay and I have been doing this band basically since we were teenagers and things have changed much for all of us since that time. I feel like we've had a great run and made some great records over the past 15 years for both Hollywood and Side One Dummy and left a legacy that will not be soon forgotten.

The Suicide Machines far exceeded any of our expectations and I never imagined that we'd be able to ever do the things that we ended up getting the opportunity to do.

Playing shows, working, and becoming friends with many of our heros and influences and traveling around the world to play our music for people are things that I never dreamed we'd be doing when we started this band.

Not bad for a bunch of working class kids from Detroit.

Now we are all doing what we need to do and moving on to other things musically and personally. As the last post about this said I do have a new band with some of my homies called Bayonetting The Wounded which you can check out at www.myspace.com/bayonettingthewounded. It's lo-fi punk with Hammond B3 organ. It's very new and we have a couple of demos which we recently put up and we are actively working on more songs at this time. We're having fun with it and we'll most likely have a recording out by the end of this year. Not sure what label yet.

It's been a lot of fun! But - all good things must eventually come to an end and this is a positive move in many different ways for all of us.Thanks to everyone! Much love and we'll see you all
somewhere soon!

this is just a note to say that something has been kicking around in the background that i have not told you about. its called The Eraser. nigel produced & arranged it . i wrote and played it. the elements have been kicking round now for a few years and needed to be finished & i have been itching to do something like this for ages. it was fun and quick to do. inevitably it is more beats & electronics. but its songs. stanley did the cover. yes its a record! no its not a radiohead record. as you know the band are now touring and writing new stuff and getting to a good space so i want no crap about me being a traitor or whatever splitting up blah blah... this was all done with their blessing. and i don't wanna hear that word solo. doesnt sound right. ok then thats that.

itcamefromculturecity.blogspot.com
Week one
Trial By Fire

When i thought of Starting a blog sight and getting my own computer about last Summer i never thought i will be hard itgot to tell you trying to get a computer was a 2 headache and a half trying to get a computer from dell and the 99 bucks for S&H for a $299 computerand since i don't have a car in a city with the worst transportion in the country with no mass trasit it was impossale, so after all this waiting the person in the household brought a another computer (sorry it not a Dell) and wait two months, and a couple of weeks to get a desk for art van two hours toset up the desk which cost $160 or $180 i forgot, and a ander week when i tried to see if i get the best internet deals with the reading the find print but in a stange way i got internet access from comcast my cable company but i never call comcast the person who i share the computer with who i thought call comcast never did as well so i got stuck with a internet sevrie added to a already high Cable Bill.

So After i fulbum around the computer for almost two weeks and i deciced let did it now so i went on blogger.com and set up account very carefully and set up what the blog be like the Look(Template) and after i finsh that i went on yahoo.com to set-up My Blog E-mail at:
