For The Good Times - The Kris Kristofferson Story

Mondays - 6:33

Steve Earle profiles the life and work of one of the most prolific songwriters in music history.

Kris Kristofferson's career is the stuff of legends. His songs have been recorded by over 450 artists, he has had over 17 Top 40 albums and won three Grammy Awards.

He has earned his status as living legend with songs such as Me and Bobby McGee, Help Me Make It Through The Night and For The Good Times.

Kris has also starred in over 90 films, including A Star Is Born alongside Barbra Streisand, for which he was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Actor.

In this special four-part series Steve Earle traces Kris' career from sweeping floors in the Columbia Studios in Nashville to winning the Country Music Association Award and the Academy of Country Music Award for Song of the Year in the same year for different songs.

High And Mighty

Tuesday 10:30 PM

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb, celebrates the story of the falsetto voice from church music to chart hits via castrati and doo-wop bands.

He uncovers falsetto singing in almost every style of music making including heavy metal, cosmic 70s, comedy song and power ballads.

Robin plays examples of all "high and mighty" music, and gives a master class on how the falsetto sound is made and why it is the most natural thing to do for a man who wants to reach the high notes.

This Week - Too Much Too Young

Paul Sexton tells the story of the 2 Tone record label and the band at its centre, The Specials.

In 1979, 2 Tone exploded on to the UK music scene. Led by The Specials, an invasion of ska bands had the whole country dancing. The Specials captured the times perfectly with a series of hit singles and albums that tackled social issues, unemployment and racism.

The 2 Tone label was the brainchild of Jerry Dammers of The Specials, whose plan was to create his own Coventry-based version of Motown Records.

Paul Sexton traces the fortunes of 2 Tone Records, from its early successes to its demise in 1985 and ponders their possible re-union. First broadcast on Radio 2.
