JELLYFISH
(Israel/2007—directed by Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen)

With an assured delicacy and slightly-off-kilter perspective, this entertaining and haunting new movie introduces us to three women who cross paths at a Tel Aviv wedding. Batiya, who’s just lost a boyfriend, is working at the wedding in a dead-end waitress job. Joy, a Filipina domestic, tends to an aged woman while longing for the companionship of her own child, thousands of miles away. When the bride, Keren, breaks her ankle, a disastrously tragicomic honeymoon soon follows. Winner of the Camera d’Or prize for Best First Feature at the Cannes Festival, this elegant, comic film marks a new cinematic voice in the husband and wife team of writer-directors Keret and Geffen.
