MY WINNIPEG
(Canada/2007-directed by Guy Maddin)

Returning by popular demand, Canadian wunderkind Guy Maddin’s (Brand Upon the Brain!) joyously demented, visionary, brilliantly witty new work is a personal (and personally narrated) fever dream about young Guy’s childhood in the wintry wilds of the hometown of his memories. Magical, hilarious and deviously insightful, Maddin’s ruminations on the town that shaped his sensibilities result in a surprisingly sweet and utterly unique memoir. Maddin describes his mixture of documentary and surrealism as “docu-tasia,” yet no word can come close to describing this extraordinary filmmaker’s command of his medium – his ability to fashion films that appear to be long-lost artifacts from a movie history that never quite existed, but which speak comically – and eloquently – to our collective imaginations. A GIRL CUT IN TWO
(France/2007/directed by Claude Chabrol)

Claude Chabrol is France’s grand master of suspense. With nearly 60 feature films behind him, including Le Boucher and This Man Must Die, Chabrol returns triumphantly to the screen with this razor-sharp, darkly seductive social satire, filled with unforgettably nasty characters. Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool) is an ambitious and beautiful TV weather girl, torn between her love for a jaded novelist several decades her senior and the attentions of the young heir to a pharmaceutical fortune – whose bizarrely unstable behavior becomes increasingly alarming. As the whims and demands of both men begin to take their toll, passions darken, and the stakes of this fiendishly entertaining tale lead inexorably to a shocking yet satisfying conclusion. New York, Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. (115 min.)

OPERATION FILMMAKER
(USA/2007/directed by Nina Davenport)

In the wake of the Operation Iraqi Freedom, American actor-director Liev Schreiber had an idealistic notion: to rescue an Iraqi film student from the rubble of his country and bring him to the West as an intern on a Hollywood movie (Schreiber’s own Everything is Illuminated). What should have become a heartwarming tale – a small victory plucked from a nightmarish situation – quickly evolved into something quite different. As the war itself was already demonstrating, “good intentions” can yield startlingly unexpected consequences – not always for the better. This not-to-be-missed documentary features real-life appearances by Elijah Wood and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Special Jury Prize, Chicago International Film Festival. (92 min.)

Chinese-Canadian director Yung Chang returns to the stunning, quickly-disappearing landscape of his grandfather’s youth to trace the surreal experience of a lavish “farewell cruise” – packed with well-to-do American and European tourists – as it traverses the gargantuan waterway. Overflowing with wit and deeply perceptive humanism, Chang captures a decisive moment in modern history in what The New York Times called “An astonishing documentary of culture clash and the erasure of history.” (93 min.)

ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD
(USA/2007—directed by Werner Herzog)

“No director demonstrates Werner Herzog’s gift for depicting the crushing inhuman power of natural landscapes, and the way that power transforms the human subject into something problematic. The vast empty splendor of Antarctica represents the quintessential Herzog setting and inspiration, with the physicists, biologists and vocanologists Herzog interviews – each struggling to extract meaning from this place – functioning as both comic and heroic doppelgangers within the director’s visionary enterprise. With Herzog’s penchant for lyrical speculation balanced by solid scientific and historical fact, Encounters reveals a place that exists wholly apart from our prosaic day-to-day human society, and represents a decisive work by an artist at the height of his powers.” –Larry Gross, Telluride Film Festival (98 min.)

DJ SPOOKY'S REBIRTH OF A NATION
This THursday at 8 P.M.

Conceptual artist Paul D. Miller, AKA DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, draws on his celebrated skills as a writer, musician, club DJ, philosopher, and social critic to create a multimedia performance that examines mythmaking and propaganda. Rebirth of a Nation is a video remix of D.W. Griffith’s 1915 silent film The Birth of a Nation, hailed for its use of pioneering editing techniques and reviled for its racist depiction of African-Americans and distorted account of American history. Through Rebirth of a Nation, Miller offers a twenty-first century response to Griffith’s film that questions the fragmented perceptions that make up our complex history. Working in the motif of “DJ as director,” the artist cuts and pastes celluloid sequences “live” to create a new experience. The accompanying soundtrack is a mix of Miller’s electronic compositions, including a score recorded by the acclaimed string ensemble Kronos Quartet. The performance will be followed by a moderated discussion with the artist.

Since divorce is illegal, he hatches a plan to lure Roslaia into the arms of another and then murder her in a justifiable effort to “save his honor.” Pietro Germi’s hilarious satire of Sicilian male-chauvinist culture won the 1962 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, though it was originally conceived as a drama until it became apparent that the absurdity lurking at the story’s core was a bitterly funny comedy in disguise. This week is one of thouse weeks where one movie get all press because one something or one thing of greather important it get special attenion more the the surporrting cast, since a untimely event back in February the top released of this week have more meaning other than the script other than what it all about but who is in it

This is the latest of the batman film fanchiese since it was reviled back in 2005 with "Batman Begins", Christian Bale return as the Cape Curser as he fight crime in Gotham City and his alter ego Bruce Wayne.

the movie also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal taking over form Katie Holmes as Bruce Wayne love inster Rachel Dawes, Michael Caine returing as his bulter Lord Alfred, Gary Oldman Lt. as Lt. Officer James Gordon and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

but there is one stars that is getting all the attention, that is the late Heath Ledger who played the comical but dangererst "The Joker" is what turn out to be his last complet film roll before his untimely death back January 22 at the age of 28

The early review that i have read it look like the heath protrail of the clown prince of crime [which have been play in the past by Jack Nickinson in "Batman" in 1989 and Cesar Romero in the 1960's tv seriers] is one of the best perfromnce of the joker ever on the on screen.

and not olny that this is a tribute to one of the great Character actor who was gone way too soon, and yes he was a really good actor, i saw the "I'am not there" in the discount thether back in march and he was really good in it, he was also in "Monster's Ball", "Lords of Dogtown" [which was base out of the wonderful doc dogtown and Z-Boys] and the movie that won him a oscar non "Brokeback Mountain"

MY BROTHER IS AN ONLY CHILD

A smash hit in Italy, My Brother is an Only Child reunites director Luchetti with the screenwriters of his acclaimed The Best of Youth. Set in a small town in the 1960s and 70s, it’s the story of two brothers who want to change the world – one as a prime mover in the local Communist Party, the other as a Fascist. What begins as a simple tale of sibling rivalry becomes an indelible portrait of the social upheavals of those turbulent times, as well as an unexpected love story. An intensely satisfying cinematic work about dreams and disillusionments, My Brother harks back to the exuberance of the early classics by Bellochio and Bertolucci.

And playing on the Saturday Double Creaher
feather at 3:00 PM on Saturday

THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD

These sequels to the 1957 classic The 7th Voyage of Sinbad both feature fantastic creatures from special-effects wizard Ray Harryhausen. In The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, the fearless sailor (played by John Phillip Law) reconstructs a golden map that leads him to strange lands and amazing adventures. (105 min.)

SINBAD AND THE EYE OF THE TIGER

Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger finds our intrepid captain (Patrick Wayne) saddled with the task of restoring back into human form a prince who’s been transformed into a baboon just before his coronation day. Harryhausen’s last film in the Sinbad cycle was nearly two years in production, and looks great on the big, big screen! (113 min.)

And this week at Detroit Film Theatre at the D.I.A.

MY WINNIPEG

From Canadian wunderkind Guy Maddin (Brand Upon the Brain! The Saddest Music in the World) comes another joyously demented, deeply witty work; this time, it’s a personally narrated fever dream about young Guy’s childhood in the wintry hometown of his memories. Maddin describes My Winnipeg’s disarming blend of documentary and surrealism as “docutasia,” a singular vision that appears to be a long-lost artifact from a movie history that never quite existed. Winner, Best Canadian Feature, Toronto Film Festival.
The Creature from the Black Lagoon
CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

In the beloved 3-D Creature from the Black Lagoon, a scientific expedition travels up the Amazon and encounters an astounding amphibian with humanoid features. The stalwart explorers (Richard Carlson, Julie Adams and Richard Denning) are amazed and terrified as they wrestle (literally) with the incredible Gill-Man! (79 min.)

IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE

Based on a story by Ray Bradbury, It Came from Outer Space stars Richard Carlson as a man who believes he’s witnessed a spaceship’s crash landing – though local residents (mistakenly) dismiss it as a meteor. One by one, their minds are taken over by “it,” and it’s up to Carlson and Barbara Rush to stand up to the one-eyed monster! Both films will be shown in the miracle of “anaglyphic” 3-D. Red and blue glasses will be provided! (81 min.)
