BREAKING CULTURE NEWS

C-POP MAY CLOSE FOR GOOD IN JUNE

My jaw just drop when i read this in the Detroit News Web site just after 4 PM

According to the Detroit News web site
http://www.detnews.com/ The Bad economy in the Detroit area have calm a high profile victim.

The C-POP Art Gallery in midtown Detroit
Courtyard Marquee
the indie art place Next to the Magic Stick complex on the corner of Woodward and Willis near Wayne State may close in June.

According to owner Tom Thewes "staying open just doesn't make sense" blaming slow art sales, the Troubled of doing business in Detroit, and the building landlord's to put the building for sale on the property over a year ago and begin in bad times in the Detroit Metro Area did not help much.

there may be hope by turning the building into a mix used Venue that may incorporate C-POP if all else fail June may see the end of the edged art galley that have been located at it current location since 1998 [it stared in 1995 in Royal Oak].

UPDATE #2 - 11:31 PM: the Tennessean News Paper in Nashville have more of the story:

Link to the story

Few Highlights from The tennessean:

But in downtown Nashville tonight, Jack revealed that he’s piled a few more huge endeavors on his plate. His brand-new band, The Dead Weather, played its first show at the invitation-only opening of White’s new Third Man Records building, which will serve as the headquarters for his record label and house a record store, photo studio and performance stage.

“This band is the first project to come out of this new system, which is our new studio in town and this building,” White said before playing a copy of the band’s debut album, Horehound, for guests.

“If one of the bands working here says, ‘Jack, there’s a great band that played at the End on Friday night, you should check these guys out,’ Saturday morning, they can come to Third Man Studios and we can cut a couple of songs. They can come back to the photo studio and we can take a photo of them. We can cut the acetate and run it down the block, and within three weeks, we can have a thousand copies of a 45 that they can sell at shows.”

The band performed for a room full of fans, friends and industry insiders that included Sheryl Crow and Martina McBride.

and the Third Man Records have a web site as well:
http://www.thirdmanrecords.com

From the web site:

Third Man Records, the imprint on which Jack White releases all of his music including The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, now has a physical location in downtown Nashville. White's new Third Man Records building serves as the company HQ and houses the label's offices plus a vinyl record store, photo studio, dark room and performance stage.

In celebration of the building's opening, the label’s newest rock outfit, The Dead Weather, delivered their first public performance with a set including songs from their forthcoming album, Horehound. The band, fronted by Alison Mosshart (known to music fans as one half of The Kills) includes The Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence on bass, Dean Fertita from Queens Of The Stone Age on guitar and Jack White on drums and vocals. In addition to playing, White also served as producer on Horehound. Recording took place earlier this year in just three weeks at the newly constructed Third Man Studio, designed from the ground up by White. Third Man plans a June release for the album.

Around 150 fans, family and friends attended the Third Man Records grand opening event and exchanged their letter-pressed invitations for limited edition 7" vinyl pressings of The Dead Weather's debut single "Hang You From The Heavens" (b/w a stealth cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?"). The Dead Weather hand painted each of the 150 7" records that also included a different photo booth strip of the band members. Downloads of these two songs are now available exclusively through iTunes.

DETROIT THREADS - DOCILE RECORDS RE-RELEASE PARTY

The Metro Times Hamtramck Bowout 12 - Day Three

Last Night it was day Three of the Metro Times Hamtramck blowout and last night was a real great night for local music because it was a oh so good day with temp near the mid 60's, it would be a enjoyable night for going up and down around the hamtramck area.

There would no considering about bundle up for cold weather, it was just cool to walk to one gig to the Next gig or take the shuttle bus which is well begin run this year including the Night Move Bus which is a difference experience because it a green bus and instead of the crappy music from a radio station there was local music pump in the bus and it was all local.

not only that there was some good Vittuam Water on the front of the bus which was good for those of you tried after a full show of taking a rest from all that walking, Oh despise report that was put on the web, No i don't need a Segway thanks you very much, I am fine.

The Best part of the blowout is for new place to offer discount for the blowout and the Towbriged House of Coffee offer a discount and add a quite from a popular you tube clip of some hot head cable host to tell everybody "WILL DO IT LIVE".

After a few days of teasing to the Blog think he would show up as me[which is not true] i did see former MT and current freelance writer Johnny Loftus show up at the K and C checking out the blowout, and it look like he is doing well.

Last night was pretty full all over the place by the 11 PM some of the placed i visit it was near or almost full house when i went to the "Atlas Bar" it was full for four hours Friend, i spend the 1st ten minutes with MT Editor W. Kim Hairon until i found a spot where some of my friends was sitting, that how crowed it was.

and one more note some of the bands play much, much early, i was going to see Elle and the fonts they was going to play at 9:40 PM but play at the same time as the blue flowers, and miss Kelly jean clawell because she play early as well not only that Fred Thomas [of SLGTM fame]and Aran Ruth switch time slot so when they say line up subject to change, think it will change at the last mintue.

as for the music highlights the K of C roof blow off with the sounds of the dirtbombs which have a great line-up these days with the addition of Zachary Weedon of the readies which make a prefit match for Ko demon fuzz playing guitar, the K of C Main Hall was total full expect for the back which is amazing despite the bad sound.

also ripping the blowout was "The Terrible Twos" who punk rock was awesome and blew everybody ears at the blow out.

also good was Tone & Niche which there music is good live you always like good band with string in it and they was good.

also good and fun was four hours friends it great to see a good band who add country and rock together and not only that the girl in the band [who is the girlfriend of the lead singer] look pretty cool.

also Great and cool and also seeing them for the first time since Changing there band name from Ether Aura was "The Blueflowers" which was real cool to see the band, i had to miss them two weeks ago because i when to the back in spades show, but they sound good and at the same time look like a real pretty band may be it the addition of pretty cool base player.

Now i arrived at the carbon bar to see "Jason Croff Family Band" they was going to go on at about 12:20 AM, but end it up going on 12:40 AM i did not stick around because i took a shuttle to the Knight of Columbus to catch the dirtbombs to round up the night.

Well Tonight is the last night of the blowout and yes the blowout least fave friend "Bad Weather" will arrived, but it will not be cold and snow as in years past but it will be cold and rainy with a little bit of thunder and no it not going to be the NBA Team from OKC.

but you stay dry for THE SWAMP SISTERS, FRIENDLY FOES, SATORI CIRCUS, THE DETROIT COBRAS, CARJACK and a lot,lot more and after the Next blowout will be in 12 months from now.

Stay Safe and stay Dry.

The Metro Times Hamtramck Bowout 12 - Day Two

It was Day two of the Hamtramck blowout

after getting wipe out after day one and writing my own account of day one and checking for photo and video of Day one, it good to know that the blow out was in my hometown for the next three nights.

the best part about this that i could goes out in my back year to see some great local bands.

and Since Thursday is a Work day this year the promoter push back the start times for Thursday about a Full hour and they speard the set times meaning the first band stated between 8-9 PM, this is good in past year where they all start at the same time and you have to split time two bands.

Not only that the weather which in past years have been snowy and cold with the temps on some years at about 10 with the wind chill at about -2, well yesterday i was in the low 50 with the same for tonight help with the hi at 64 and nice.

But it going to rain on Saturday, but it will rain early so i will be no problem, i Hope.

it was kind of quite no drama, expect for one drunk lady who was upset because she did not know there will be cover for the next three night for the right to get wasted too much.

Among the music highlight from Night two well it was all consertaed the kinght of Columbus hall in the city West Central side highlight by last year buzz band "The Silent years" but this was not your usual Silent years show it was a show with the five core member( Josh Epstein, Mike Majewski,Cassandra Verras,Ryan Clancy, and
Fabian Halabou) but have a hours section and not only that a Choir help out with some viocal of the songs and they was all dress up in there warm Sngglie

Lead singer Joshua Epstein did dress his best dressing in the spirit of Flaming Lips Frontman Wayne Corin dress up in a blow tie and waring a car bletbuckle, it have the crowd dancing and even i Dance a little bit with Carey Gustafson which was great.

also great last night and back up the buzz from begin on the cover of last week Detroit News My Time section now i only listen to about six or seven songs before i when to see "the decks" at the "PayChecks" but this band is real wonderful to see live and the frontman Randy Chabot is pure Genies Thur and Thur and make all Thor UK Band To Shame.

also fun last night was Marco Polio and the New Vaccines and the frontman Steve was total all over the place running around singing going nuts and in one point near the end of the set was in the hallway ask some the crowd to say some thing in the wireless mic which too some total unperpair.

Also great last night was over at the Trowbride House of Coffee where i saw the Lansing beat and tune of Public Pubes which was fun to see as they did it off the floor of stage one at the THC.

also good last night was was Sikik Nation which was good last night also got a CD for my show on WHFR-FM (Wednesdays from noon-2PM) they was good.

also playing who i saw last night was The Darts, [OK], Darling Implrial, [Really good and have not seen them in a long time], The Word Play, [Good], and the Fore-mention The Decks,[who was great].

And one more thing to wrap up the night a band that Opened up the last time Ra Ra Roit the last time they was hear Blase Splee was handing out there four songs EP of a album there making and will be out in June i listen to it over the weekend and may play it on my Wednesday WHFR Show.

Two Days Down, Just two More to go and since this is the weekend the first gig beging at there regual times with the 1st set going between 9-10 PM, Bands tonight GREAT LAKES MYTH SOCIETY, FOUR-HOUR FRIENDS,JASON CROFF FAMILY BAND,RACHEL AND JUNK, I, CRIME, TONE & NICHE, ELLE AND THE FONTS, TERRIBLE TWOS, THE DIRTBOMBS,LEE MARVIN COMPUTER ARM, CITY CENTER (Fred Thomas of SLGTM),ARAN RUTH, KELLY JEAN CALDWELL, BROADZILLA, VOLEBEATS, SCARLET OAKS, THE BLUEFLOWERS, DUTCH PINK, JEHOVAH'S WITNESS PROTECTION PROGRAM, WOODMAN, THE GRANDE NATIONALS, THE HIGH STRUNG, MADAME XD, and AUDRA KUBAT.

and Remember you can send report of what happening at a gig at the blowout at culturecitynewstips@yahoo.com

Have a great night tonight at least the weather will be nice.

The Metro Times Hamtramck Bowout 12 - Day One

Well Last Night was the first day of the 12th annuls mega showcase of local music in the city which is called the hamtramck blowout, the turn out was real good with most of it coming with the early start time.

with me i was a little bit later to the show with bus problem [Mostly waiting for the bus], i did arrived at about 8:45 PM and then there was a hic-up getting my press pass, i did get my wristband but the combination of getting there and the waiting for the band led me to my the first band on the night "Electric Fire Babies" i got up to the stick just when there was ending.

I did see a lot of old friends at the blow out last night some who i have not seen in a long time like new WDET Weekend music host Ann Delise, to fame Entertainment attorney Howard Hertz, and alot of friend who i have seen a lot and some people i who know but have not seen in a long i total forget there name, Which in my bad.

There was a lot of of people one friend notice with Video Cameras mostly with for there blog mostly for you tube and mostly for the hell of it, oh yes there was you photo people and in the age of twitter Cell phones texting to there twitter site, that some thing to think of Next year.

Among the music highlights yesterday was you got it "the meatmen" the punk band who know how to crated a following with there lead singer Tesco Vee dress for the show in out fit design by Muffy Karona, the band did entertain and offend at the same time and not only that the music was not that bad but it was true punk rock.

Also i like "The Octopus" feather former member of the "Deadstring Brothers" Masha Marjieh i meet her at the Eagles of Death Metal show a few weeks ago but seeing her on stage i can say man she can sing and still look cool after the show she is my new fave muse at the moment.

Also good last night was the "The Gepetto Files" now i have seen it before years back but this time have hacking band and i was a crazy mix a puppet show with with a live band but i was pulled off.

also good last night was silverghost who sound so great with with a good film backdrop but i heard only five song because i forgot Outrageous Cherry was playing at the same time at the Majestic so i went there and they was OK last night, also great was Child bite, The Wrong Numbers and hip-hop/ R and B act "Fluent" Who was in the Metroitmes blowout cover.

after a long night for me, night two in hamtown is just getting started but it will now be up I-75.

BREAKING CULTURE NEWS - UPDATE

THE NEW MUSIC SHOW ON WDET
WILL BE ON THE WEEKEND ONLY

here is a update to a story broke last night
on the Detroit news web site and posted on this site last night

it was the story about some sort of music coming back to WDET with
the hire of former WDET-FM DJ Ann Delisi our hope in culture it would be a daily
thing i hate to disappointed you fans

from the Press Released i read she will be on the Weekend only, the show will be called "Ann Delisi's Essential Music." and it will be aired for noon to 4 PM begin February 28th.

the show is what is begin called be GM J. Mikel Ellcessor Ann's new show will be a fun, contemporary and thoroughly hand-picked approach to music that moves Detroit," said Ellcessor. "Ann will guide us through the essential music, both new and familiar, that's shaping our culture and will feature music Made in Detroit every hour

that is the only music show added to the line-up the rest of the change on the weekday line are two new news talk show on that mirror "BBC World have your say" which lasted only a year in 2006 called "On Point" that will aired from 10 AM and a two hours news show called "The Takeaway" which aired for two hour from 8-10 AM meaning "Morning Edition" will aired three hours in stead of four hours.

"Detroit Today" the all local news show will move to a time slot TBA

MY TAKE: after reading the press released you can say i am a little bit disappointed it not a Monday Thu Friday gig, but don't be surprise if this becoming a slow process, hey Ann Delisi is a start for once but how are you going to ask listener to listen to a show on the slowest day of the week which is the weekend.

i think people at DET not getting the message that where all news format with the same news on 20 sourced you hear all day, but have any one seen the rating for the whole all-NPR line-up in the last rating book it a 0.9, and not to get down on the head-up at DET don't forget the weak ecomiced is still a factory.

and one more thing not to knock Ann Delisi, she is a good host who been in the scene for a long time and was really good what she did at WDET.CIDR,and as of late WRCJ and most of us remember her as host of backstage pass one of the best show to air in the 90's, but like i said having her back to do a show on a station so off the beaten path it a start.

Let me know what you think, drop me a line or at my e-mail address on the left side.

And here is the press released from PR Newswire

BREAKING CULTURE NEWS

SOME MUSIC TO RETURN BACK TO WDET

yes you hear me correct, the above is true according to the Detroit News in there on line edition

the paper is reporting on there web site
[Link here]

that the New G.M. J. Mikel Ellcessor have what the paper is reporting changes in programming that will infuse the station with more Detroit music and attitude and not only that one of at DJ who have sing to be a DJ is Ann Delisi.

yes the same Ann Delisi who did DJ at the station from 1983 to 1995

the details will be mention in a Press release tomorrow,

according to the Detroit News Ellcessor said this -

When more of Detroit's radio is coming out of town, WDET is drilling deeper into the city", "At a time when so much of the world is talking about Detroit, and Detroit is absent from that conversation, the people in the city who are being talked about are like props in a play. It's vital to get their voices back up into that national dialogue."

"There will be music from somebody living and working and making music in Detroit every single hour that she is on the air," Ellcessor said. "That's a promise."

there have been no mention about this on the WDET web site it self as of 2:30 AM

the other changes at the station according to the Detroit News include a new program that will allow nonprofit arts organizations to get their news on the air, and a switch of some of the current NPR content to programs that will allow more live interaction with Detroit listeners.

but Ann Delisi will be the only DJ for now Ellcessor did said it is not turning the clock back on the all music format that was there almost five years ago, the station plans a mix of music and news that he feels is forward-looking and suited to Detroit

and why Ann Delisi well from the press released "Ann has changed and evolved over the years, as we all have," Ellcessor said. "She's coming back to WDET because we're going to create opportunities to both guide people through today's contemporary music and to get more people engaged in the WDET conversation."

To return to a partly music programs could be a help because it you have been reading the blog site in the last three years you know since most of the music program was dump by then GM Michael Coleman a lot of bands and you know a lot of bands have skip detroit Big time

Culture City Grammy preview

You can say it the grammy according to me

i know that this is what the ads called it or at least to CBS is Music biggest night
but in the last few years with sale of CD down and music on radio and on TV gotten less and less avbalive and the same time the music have going more sucker and sucker and the real music getting pass over like a family by passing a really cool amusman park on the highway for a much crapper state park down the road.

So tonight in LA for the 51st time the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences also know as the grammy people will hand out the grammys in a time where the music bussness is begin runin by music that begin judge by looks than the real music, big time acts in big time event [swaring in day, and the super bowl]lip syncing it, and reallty show asking kids to do really bad Krayoe to a star to make more really bad music.

to help you prepare for the bad boring night adhead to give you my opinion

The Culture City Interview

Melody Baetens

Writer, Musicican, Booker,
Reporter, Editor, Broadcaster
Local Music Fan, And now
Co-Owner of Small Bar in Hamtramck

Last week One of the long time hero's of the Detroit Rock Scene
announced last week that she is doing some thing she never done
and now she going to do she will be the co-owner of small bar in
Hamtramck.

not only that she will book shows at small, which mean she will leave here job booking shows at the Belmont which she have done for the last five years

last week i interview Melody about the new changes in her life
and not only other things involving the Detroit rock scene and including
one other weekly thing she also leaving which air tonight.

Key:

ICFCC: Culture City
MB: Melody Baetens

ICFCC: So Melody baetens how are you doing
MB: I'm great! I'm very excited, and a little nervous.

ICFCC: just Last Thursday it was made official you are now co owner of small bar in hantramck how did you fell
MB Yes, after a month of going through the process, it's now official. I'm very hopeful that 2009 will be a great year. I'm super excited to be a bar owner and a Hamtramck business person.

ICFCC: you have almost done everything in the Detroit music scene, follower, band member, music writer, songwriter, Booker, and something total new how did you go into owning a bar in Detroit and who ask first
MB: Dave Malosh and I have been kicking around the idea of owning a bar since 2007. It always seemed like such a pipe dream. Dave was talking to Mike Mouyianis one day recently about our goals, and Mike let us in on the fact that his silent partner was ready to sell his share. It was the perfect fit, at the perfect time.

ICFCC: in a down economy these days
MB: The economy is down, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't work toward your goals. If you don't, then then economy wins.

ICFCC: now only that since you now co own the bar, you have to give up two other job, One booking bands at the Belmont on jos campau and one other job can you tell me that
MB: Yes, this Tuesday, Jan 27 is my last day co-hosting Detroit Local 101 on Riff2.[WRIF-FM HD radio side channel] It's sad, but I do so many things and I have to prioritize. My business (Small's) and my career (The Detroit News) have to come first. So I let go of the Belmont and Riff2. I will still play in bands and I still book the Meatmen.

ICFCC: you been booking band at the Belmont for five years doing Riff 2 Detroit Local 101 for three how tough was it to let go of both jobs?
MB: It's bittersweet. I'm sad, but change feels good, and it's needed. I can still go to the Belmont and see bands, hang out with Darren, Tait, Paulette and everyone. I can still see Suzy and the Riff2 crew -- I may even come in and guest host from time to time, or at least I'd like to. I will miss listening to Arthur P tease Meltdown in the jock lounge every Tuesday, though.

ICFCC: what do you mean by Meltdown
MB: Meltdown is the 7 p.m. DJ on WRIF. He does Mandatory Metallica!

ICFCC: you do have a day job at the Detroit News as a Writer and Editor, recently both the News And The Other Detroit Paper the Detroit Free Press announce changes in how the paper are present and deliver[Now Three Days a week beging in late march] in a effort to reverse a down thernd in the paper as more people of to the net to get there news instead the paper did those come into play in owning small?
MB: No, I would've invested in Small's even if the papers didn't announce this.

ICFCC: So what kind of plan do you have for small now that you now co-own it
MB: I've always loved Small's, so I want it to stay mostly the same. I'd like to go back to having 2-4 live shows a week. I'm excited to do more comprehensive promotion. I want to have more national acts. Mike and I will be working together to flush out the schedule and make it awesome. I also want to add wine, and some of the newer liquors.

ICFCC: you mean that good bands that i like that have skip detroit every time i read pitchfork.com
MB: Yes!

ICFCC: that bring a this question why do all the good band me or the other blogger in town skip Detroit these days it look like they go on tour and it Cleveland, Toledo and Chicago or Toronto and we get left out and even thry play SE Michigan in Royal Oak, Pontiac and Ann Arbor or worst Western Michigan?
MB: It could be a number of factors. Routing, is one. Booking agents strive to include Columbus because it's a college town, and Chicago because of the obvious, and sometimes a Detroit stop is swept under the mat. Also, many times bands don't decide where they go, they have a label, management and/or booking agent that fills in the dates for them. Another issue may be money. Bands get more for playing Chicago than Detroit because more people go out in Chicago. The Chicago promoters can guarantee more money because more people are likely to show up. The only reason I can see for booking in Grand Rapids instead of Detroit is that GR is a college town. Detroit is a college town too, but people outside the city rarely see it that way. I think playing Royal Oak or Ann Arbor should be considered a "Detroit stop," at least that's the way the booking agents are figuring it. I'd say, if you want your favorite bands to play Detroit, tell them, and tell their record label or booking agent as well!

ICFCC: do you think radio is a big time factory because of the WDET programming distaer back in 2005 [music to NPR News]
MB I never thought of that. I do think that having a lot of local and indie music played on the radio is important. I just started listing to WDET a year ago, so I don't really know how it was in 2005.

ICFCC: because other than the HD side channels life riff 2 Commerical radio total sucks

MB: I can see why you would say that. I do like to listen to WRIF in the morning, and WCSX at night. Their HD station Deep Tracks is pretty good.

ICFCC: a few more question before end the interview where the Local music scene and the Indie Music Scene be from now in about five years will the scene more tracking as they move away from bad pop music.
MB: It's time to go back to the 90s. Annette (my band mate in the Swamp Sisters) and I have been talking about it for about a year, and Ryan Allen is on board too. The 90s are far enough away, that we miss them, and I think the music of the 90s will start to influence more musicians in the near future. I know Swamp Sisters hope to channel Belly, Veruca Salt and Silverchair when we record our upcoming single.

ICFCC: So will see the second coming of those band and may be the reunion of the legend riot girl band Sleater-Kinney
MB: *silence*
