The "PLAY" List for the Weekending Jan 18th

We beging this week edtion with a little bit of change
as you proable know by now or you don't know by now
last week the owner of LA radio station KDLD-FM [103.1]
better know for most of you as Indie 103.1 deceid to
swich format form indie music to a Spanish language music
format and a lot of those indie fans was sad and disapoined
as there fave music for five year as on of the best radio station
in the US by rolling stone magitzine was off the air as the station
was pulled from terrestrial airwaves to on-line radio only

I know it kind of suck because we all have been there
like 1992 when WDTX [99.5 the fox/ Now WYCD-FM Young Country}
Swich there from Top 40 Music [Which i still like at the time]
to a cover format to FM Talk which lasted 6 months show they air
that contry music which they still air today, i which i can tell you
the full story, but here a
wiki link for the full story.

and 2005 when the free-from music die on WDET-FM when
Michael Coleman fired Martin Bandyke[who now working at WQKL-FM]
and after that every body else on the station as goes all NPR
and the Detroit Music Scene have never the same since
and almost every indie band have skip detroit
Thank a lot.

Well as a vetren of Detroit Radio [on the Radio and on-line]
we know how it feel to lose a station that you like
and real people who put passtion in the music that they play
and in this sad case of affier of Radio where a computer
run the station i know it stuck big as asking the question why
the Black KIds/ Mates of state joint tour is skiping Detroit
i thought so

So this frist thing on the list is what would become the
last show of Indie 103.1 New Music Show Dead air which aired
on Jan 11st 2009, to prove you can kill the indie kids for
a boys bands trio who will be forgotten in five years.

Mondays 6:30

As part of Radio 2's Motown Season, Pete Mitchell unearths rare treasures, re-examines old truths and hears about every side of the Motown label, from the likes of Smokey Robinson, Mary Wilson and Brian Holland.

Part 2: Just My Imagination - The Sound and The Songs

Prolific writers Brian Holland and Eddie Holland talk us through how to write a song for Hitsville.

We hear the early versions of the songs, the B-sides and reversions, and learn how they were made into chart-topping polished products.

Stubborn Kind of Fella: Remembering Marvin Gaye

Tuesdays - 11:30

On 1st April 2009, it will be 25 years since soul legend Marvin Gaye was shot dead by his father. This is another chance to hear Smokey Robinson paying tribute to his life and music; and re-examines his legacy as one of the most influential soul singers of the 20th Century

The Sound of America: A Global Inspiration

Saturday - 2 PM

Pete Mitchell looks at the far-reaching influence the Motown sound has had on artists and musicians around the world. Since its inception in 1959 the sound of young America has inspired many artists making music to this day - in some cases it has completely changed their lives.

Mitchell gathers together an eclectic mix of musicians to talk about the label. He talks to one of the world's greatest living contemporary jazz artists, Diane Reeves, who herself was born in the motorcity; rock legend Lenny Kravitz about how his life changed when he heard the Jackson Five for the first time; singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow who cut her teeth playing in a Motown covers band; punk queen Siouxsie Sioux, who was inspired by the music of Stevie Wonder; poet Billy Bragg on how his first political stirrings were brought on by Motown; American electro synth outfit Sparks on the string of brilliant Motown 45’s; and Paul Weller on how his Motown obsession still features in his music to this day.

There are also Motown musings from Incognito, Eddy Grant, Martin Fry of ABC, Alexander O’Neal, Nile Rodgers and Suggs.

Motorcity Blues

On Air Right Now

Against a backdrop of racism, segregation, poverty, inadequate housing, the civil rights movement, and the worst riot in American history, the Motor City would emerge as the world’s number one automobile manufacturer and the world’s greatest exporter of soul music.

The promise of assembly-line jobs in the auto plants lured many southerners to Michigan, and the prospect of a new life in a new town was irresistible too many. The city would become a vibrant and intense melting pot. The heart of the African American community was centered around an area known locally as Black Bottom, located on the Near East Side. It was here that the early music scene of Detroit began.

Pete Mitchell travels to Detroit to track down the many artists left behind when the Motown label left the city in 1972. At the HQ of ‘Hitsville USA’, Smokey Robinson explains how the Motown magic was created. Plus, Pete visits the homes of the some of the people who contributed to the phenomenal success of the greatest black music record label of all time, including Mary Wilson of the Supremes, Otis Williams of the Temptations, Duke Fakir of the Four Tops, Kim Weston, Dennis Coffey and Uriel Jones of the Funk Brothers, the Marvelettes, the Contours and the Velvellettes.

These programmes were made with the help of Billy Wilson of the Motown Alumni Association.
