Suzi Quatro's Heroes

Mondays: 6:30

Suzi Quatro presents a series profiling six of her musical Heroes.

Programme 2 - Jackie DeShannon

Jackie DeShannon has made her mark as both a great interpreter of songs by the best composers and as a successful writer.

A singing star on the radio from the tender age of six, as a teenager she was hanging around with the giants of rock 'n' roll.

She had minor hits with Needles and Pins, and When You Walk In The Room, which were both covered by The Searchers.

Her cover of Bacharach and David's What The World Needs Now Is Love made the US top ten in 1965.

Her biggest hit as a recording artist came four years later, in 1969, with Put A Little Love In Your Heart.

As a songwriter, her first US top five hit was Dum Dum, recorded by Brenda Lee. However it was Bette David Eyes, which Jackie co-wrote with Donna Weiss in 1981 and recorded by Kim Carnes, that was a worldwide smash.

In this edition of the series, Suzi and Jackie compare notes on their struggles as women in the male-dominated world of the music business.

This Wheel's on Fire - The Soundscape of 1968

Tuesday 6:30 PM EDT

Lord Sebastian Coe, who was inspired to join his local athletics club by the 1968 Olympic Games, presents this soundscape.

Taking place in Mexico City, the games saw Britain’s David Hemery win the 400m hurdles in world-record time, and USA’s Bob Beamon become the first long-jumper to leap more than 28ft.

It was also on the victory rostrum, during the US national anthem, that sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised gloved fists in the air as a symbol of defiance in the long struggle for civil rights.

Both athletes were expelled from the Games.

Away from Mexico, the world reeled in turmoil and tragedy with the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King, tanks on the streets of Prague, and war in Vietnam.

An aural collage of archive recordings, newsreels, newspaper clips and music, form the latest addition in BBC Radio 2's Soundscape series.

Too Much Too Young:
The Story of 2-Tone

Saturday 1:04 PM

Paul Sexton traces the history of 2-Tone records and the band at its centre - The Specials.

1979 saw Ska explode onto the UK's music scene. Leading the wave were The Specials, who tackled social issues, unemployment and racism through their music.

The band were signed to the 2-Tone label, which was the brainchild of The Specials' Jerry Dammers, who wanted to create his own Motown Records - in Coventry.

2-Tone scored seven hit singles, a top-ten album, and a sell-out UK tour - all within its first year. The label also launched the careers of Madness, The Selector and The Beat.

Featuring new interviews from The Specials, Madness, The Beat and The Selector, Paul will also talk to Pete Waterman, Don Letts and Gary Bushall to follow the highs and lows of the label and its bands.

A Culture City First

well everybody for those of you who have read this blog sight for the last two year know that i have been tiring to do interview on this blog sight but it been tought mostly i have not used the My space I.M. because most of the people i know on my space don't have the the Downloadable I'M and in the last few years i have did two interview by e-mail.

so before my computer got sick at the begin of the year i was going read more fo the PR released of a lot of bands that i don't know and some bands i know from listening to the blog sight and the the my space pages.

but since i got the blog sight back up i have waiting to do a interview with a band from outside the 313 to put on this blog sight well the time have come to do this since this band is coming to town next week, and after some back and forth e-mail and a little waiting, for the first time i have a interview with a band from outside 313 it a band i have been following since the blog begin back in 2006 when i 1st noticed them on the radar section of New Music Express

And that band is:
[below this post]

The Culture City Interview with Tilly and the Wall

Tilly and the Wall was from 2001 from the ashes of a bunch bands from the Omaha, Nebraska among them Park Ave.[which feather Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes]and Magic Kiss.

the band put out there first album in 2004 on Conor Oberst Indie label "Team love" it was called "Wild Like Children" which was recorded in the basement of a friend house.

But they broke out with there next album in 2006 with the well received "Bottoms of Barrels" which feather wonderful song "Bad Education," "Rainbows in the Dark," and "The Freest Man.", and they build up a indie following with there fun foot stepping live show and very colorful and artist video

the album was so good it made the first ever Culture City festive 50 live in 2006 landing at number five.

This March they released a EP called "Beat Control" which was a warm up to the released of there third album called "O" feather a ruckus first track called "Pot Kettle Black" and a great video for the song which keyboard Nick White told stereogum "thinking Beatie Boys' "Sabotage" meets Go-Go's "Vacation."

The band have have a good following among the indie radio, music press and blogger [like myself] because of there heart warming songs, there great live show and great beats that don't come from a drum kit, but there percussion Jamie Pressnall who used tap shoe to generate the band beats for there music.

The other members of the bands are Jamie husbands Derek Pressnall [vocals, guitar],the fore mention Nick White [keyboard] Neely Jenkins [vocals, hand percussion, bass] and the free spirted bass player, hand percussion, tambourine, and vocals Kianna Alarid who i E-mail the questions and took time out of there busy tour to e-mail me back just before there Detroit show this tuesday night.

KEY:

ICFCC: Culture City
KA: Kianna Alarid, Singer, tambourine, and bass
Tilly and the Wall

ICFCC: Where are the band right Now as you type this interview.

KA: As I type this I am sitting on a couch backstage at the Paradise in Boston.

ICFCC: How the tour been so far and what have been the fans reaction to the New
Songs on the new album played Live.

KA: All the new songs have been super fun to play and people have been singing
along so that's a good sign!

ICFCC: you new album is title "O", why did you decide to name the album after a
single letter does have some to do where you live [Omaha, Nebraska] or let
say a most famous O Oprah.

KA: It's actually not the letter "O" it's more the shape but it can be taken
anyway anyone wants to take it. The symbol of a circle is meaningful as
well as being the shape of the "frame" that holds the handmade artwork on
the cover of the record.

ICFCC: what was the process like making "O' after you major brake Thru with you
last album "Bottoms of Barrels" in 2006

KA: The process was basically the same but the recording was a lot more
involved. We got the chance to record and mix with Mike Mogis and he had
brilliant ideas. It was so much fun!

ICFCC: i have listen to the new album in the on-line press kit and Bottom of
Barrels and the tap sound great on record, and doing a live show it a little
bit difference can you tell my readers what kind gear you used for the tap
shoes and do you ever do sound check.

KA: We have a very unique method for getting the taps to sound right live.
There are two different mics on the front and back of Jamie's custom made
tap floor. Then there is a sub kick mic below the surface. There are
probably other things too but I leave it to Jamie and Neal our sound
engineer to sort it out. And yes, we sound check for about 2 or 3 hours
before every show we play.

ICFCC: I know this would sound like a silly question, but i have to ask how many
tap shoe do you goes Thru a week and the reason i ask that legend have it
the Michael Flatley who was the star of "Riverdance" and "Lord of the Dance"
in his early days goes Thru three shoes a week.

KA: Jamie's tap shoes usually last for about one tour so I guess maybe for one
month.

ICFCC: In your 1st video for album "Pot Kettle Black" you guys roam around the
streets of your home town of Omaha, playing around random gig on side walk,
at the gas Station and even a parade i know you had a director but was it
tough doing a music video on the fly

KA: The video was actually very planned out and pretty easy to film! It was a
ton of fun!

ICFCC: Other than it your home town, what have living in Omaha mean to you with
your music and the band.

KA: It means a lot to us because the people there are so supportive. It's been
a great place to grow as a band.

ICFCC: What kind of music do you listen on the road and do you know any bands
that we don't know yet but once hear would get on my space.

KA: When I am driving on tour I listen to tons of different stuff. My favorite
driving music is Neu! or The Knife. Some bands you should check out are
Capgun Coup and the Black Lips!

ICFCC: In Closing, What would like to say to your fans here in Detroit before
you show here on Tuesday Night at the Stick and do you have any words for
any fans who have not warm up to you, but do want to get on the band wagon?

KA: Just that we are excited to play Detroit again! We love playing at the
Magic Stick!

ICFCC: well thank you very much for this interview, My first major
interview with a band outside 313 on the blog sight, can't wait to see you
on Tuesday Night, much success on the New Album and have safe travel on the
roads, i talk to you soon.

KA: Thank you for the interview! Sorry I didn't answer all the questions but we
don't have internet all the time and it's really hard to find a minute extra
in our days! Thanks!

Well that was a really great interview
to one of my fave indie bands
i hope they have a good show this Tuesday night

and by the way you can check out Tilly and the wall this Tuesday night

When the bride, Keren, breaks her ankle, a disastrously tragicomic honeymoon soon follows. NEW MUSIC TUESDAY - WEEK 30 [2008]

Today is July 29th, and on this day in 1945 the British Broadcasting Corporation launch BBC Radio light for light entertainment and music it was in service from 1945 to 1967 until radio one rename BBC Light to what we know it today as radio one which gave us Chris Evans, Zoe Ball[who was once married to Fatboy slim], Noel Edmonds, to the current day DJ Edith Bowman, Jo Willey, Anna Mac, Zane Lowe, Annie Nightingale, Rob da Bank, Huw Stephens and my fave Radio One DJ Steve Lamacq and don't forget a man name Peel.

and part of there public duty they have to do news and among the story on this day in 1981 was Prince Charles of Wales marry Lady Diana Spencer in the biggest wedding we ever seen with a world wide television audience of 750 million people.

also on this day in 1965 which was two year late before Radio two the The Beatles' premieres there follow up film to "A Hard Day's Night." back in 1964 "Help!"- in London in attendance that night Queen Elizabeth to see the fab four.

and speaking about "A Hard Day's Night" it was back on this day in 1998 Bob and Harvey Weinstein co-chairmen Miramax Films at the time brought the rights to the Beatles' landmark film and a year later there released 35th anniversary with new footage, a fully restored negative and digitally remastered, six-track stereo sound and it was released on a new format on DVD.

And now it time for all the new released for this Tuesday on the birthday of Wesley Crusher [a.k.a. Wil Wheaton] who is 36, Red WIngs great Ted Lindsay who 83, that Project Runway Judge Tim Gunn who is 55, Last year winner of Culture City Fave guilty pleasure "So You Think You Can Dance" Sabra Johnson is 21, and yes he still with us the forefather of the 1980s Rock 'n' Wrestling explosion Captain Lou Albano is 75

a great professional wrestler, manager and actor who in his 44 year in Wrestling in which 15 different tag teams and 4 singles competitors to championship in the ring and yes was Mario in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show back in the late 1980's but will be remember for lesser degree this video

and yes still have the rubber band just enough to pull you in for

Suzi Quatro's Heroes of Rock 'n' Roll
Mondays - 6:30

Programme 1 - Bobby Vee

Bobby Vee's career break came through the tragedy of Buddy Holly's death on 3 February 1959. Just 15, he was a local musician who joined the bill of the Winter Dance Party touring the North West.

His first hit was Suzie Baby, but his most memorable songs - Take Good Care of My Baby, Rubber Ball, The Night Has A Thousand Eyes - were produced by Snuff Garrett and written by the song writing teams of the late fifties and early sixties, including Gerry Goffin and Carole King.

The continuing popularity of these songs has led to the latest compilation of his hits remaining in the UK album charts since its release in May.

Who Breaks a Butterfly on a Wheel
Saturday - 2:04 PM

Re-telling the story of the Rolling Stones’ traumatic summer of 1967.

Following the infamous drug-bust on a party held at the Sussex country home of Keith Richards, both he and Mick Jagger were prosecuted.

Then editor of The Times, William Rees-Moog, questioned the outcome of the court case that saw Jagger and Richards handed custodial sentences for first-time offences.

He felt their sentences were harsher than ‘any purely anonymous young man’ would have received, due to their celebrity status.

The programme, which takes its name from Rees-Moog’s article, includes interviews with the former editor and Andrew Loog Oldham, then manager of the Rolling Stones.
