Post Cityfest Coverage a week later.

I am Writing this on July 13th almost one week after the 2008 Version of this year Comerica Cityfest and i almost recover for the five days of live gigs on the street of West Grand Blvd. and Second street.

I have a Sore thorte For about last Saturday to the end of the week, but i am OK now, I think this year Cityfest was a big time Sessect with George Clinton &
Parliament/Funkadelic top them all with that concert which last almost two full hours Spill over to the parking deck to W. Grand and to near by tried street it look like almost everybody try to see George Clinton by with that size of a crowd it was thought to see, the sound was good but i gave up after almost after a hour because it was too hot.

The Whole weekend was full of people lineing up to buy food with there food tickets and it was pack with a lot of long line and which ask the question among some this if the festival outgrown the area [W. Grand Blvd. Between 3rd and Cass and Second between Lothrop Road and W. Milwaukee St.].

I don't think so i know it have grown over the years and it have a little out grown, but not that much.

the whole festival recover form a day one wash out when rain swept thur the area it rain so much it force "De La Soul" to cancelled and a lot of other bands to relocated there set to the garden blow at the stick complex after a bunch phone call and texting to stick management to play there.

After that day was wash out it was nice every day after that which was nice.

as for my top act at Cityfest
he are a few highlights

George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic

OK i gave up after almost a hour of tring to see the funk father, but i did hear a half of his classic set and it sound so great after all those years.

The Saturday night Line-up at the park stage [Silverghost, Lightening Love, Great Lakes Myth Society]

Next to me know alot about music, Stirling a ture rock and roll fan and icon of the scene and know to program one stage and he did that back to back to back and put a really good mix of quirky, fun, and enjoyable night of rock music.

The Readies

Danny Kroha is still rocking and still rolling after almost 20 years and this is the latest on this legion Detroit guitarist after they put a old school sounding set which is really great, one of the band to watch.

Broken Social Scene

Alright there was no Fiest, Amy Milain, or Emily hands, or any other female and Kevin Drew had a bad back he play Thu the show, despite all that the show was really a great to see a great band that have the sprite and very good.

The Four-Hour Friends

And this band i really like a good lay back with a very good mix of members who is really good and have good song and they look great on Stage.

If i have any advice for how to improve there is one issued i would like to see i would like to see a improvement on the whether or not the band would go on after bad weather is in the area, it was frustrating to see wheter or not the "De La Soul" and i wait for about two hours, but i was told it take about a 30 minutes to set up aging for the music to start and they ran out of time and "De La Soul" was a total loss.

So this complete this blog site coverage of Comerica City Fest for a another year will do this aging Next year and now a little rest to do other things on the blog site with playing for "Culture City Live 3" which should be fun and hope to do the full Dally in the alley in September"

Live and Local Review - 2008 Comerica Cityfest

DAY FIVE [FINAL DAY]
JULY 6TH, 2008

NEW CENTER GOT FUNK UP, BIG TIME

Now don't take offence with the title of the post because Detroit got really Funk-a- Filed on the five and Final day of the Comerica Cityfest, never in my seven years of going to this event as a regular Joe fan or a regular Joe doing a indie blog site i have never ever seen the parking lot been this pack for a free gig in a long time, wired al was close but the closer on the final of the Mid-year gig put all the other acts i have seen over the years put all other to shame.

When i got the main stage at about 5:30 PM the entry point to the main stage near W. grand and third st. was fill up and it was tough to see the main stage from all the way in the back and it was crowed all the was thought on the parking lot, in the V.I.P. tent, all eight floors of the new center parking lot, on East portion of W.Grand, on West Grand Blvd. on the food court, Across the street from the other side on West Grand Blvd., on the Detroit city clerk Parking lot on the other side of the street, and Even on near by third st.

What ever power of the funk father brought in the massive in a crowd of what am i thinking between 2,000 to 4,000 in that one spot alone just to be close to, near to, or just to listen to the on of the Founding father of funk, the best view i got to see was the four floor in a nine story parking lot even that was three deep in fact almost every floor have fans watching and listen to the gig in almost mid 80's weather and withe the body heat it was in the upper 90's

After almost a full hour i gave up and when to the park stage, but before i when over to the park stage i got give my take of show before i left it was a great show over all as the stage plug in to WE-FUNK his band Parliament/Funkadelic warm up to the crowd for a good ten mintens and the Funkfather good up on stage and play a lot of the old school funk classic for two solid hours they play true the heat of the detroit crowd, now i talk to a few friends after the gig and really like the show some have good view so all around the George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic was a total smashing success in almost Evey way.

after i gave up after a hour i then when to the main stage to see "American Mars" who play a great set and was a good Plan B for those who couldn't the Funk Father also a good plan B was S.S.M. i only saw them for about 15 minutes and they was good, then even ask George Clinton to play with them, i don't if he hear them.

Also i got to see the local Family folk rock band "The Woodman" who have a great vibe and great tunes and was very good warm up for the act ahead and not after that i also saw the best crew in all of Detroit rock and roll Cetan Clawson, i only saw the last three song and sound great and meet up with 2/3 of his nice crew [Cetan crew is his two band mates and his girlfriend.]

After almost five days of going back and forth Covering gig and typing them and after a visit to the near by norther light lounge it was over and done as i warp up coverage of cityfest for avderher year as i come down after five days and get back to following live and local coverage of Indie music in and out of Detroit.

Live and Local Review - 2008 Comerica Cityfest

DAY FOUR
JULY 7th, 2008

Don't Worried Kids the real music being at 5 P.M.

well it great day to go to a festival enjoy ice cream, play tag around the park and sing-along song and then we when to the the stage and saw a very cool singing duo and play some some cool song and was asking in believed in world peace and go to school every day and become one of them and to rules the world, oh boy this is the best day ever.

O.K. the Above statement i wrote did not happened yesterday at cityfest, now just to start i have no knock at the new center council who have done a great job so far which this year cityfest mixing the difference music mixed.

But if you ever read this blog site over the last two years you probable know i write about the indie music etiher here in the 313 outside the 313 and some from the proud country of England, but a you know i try to avoid all the bad music like American idols, over-produce top 40 music and not only that kid music.

so i did not go to cityfest early on Saturday like in years past because this year the mix it giving the whole Saturday afternoon to family so mom and dad can thak the kids so and the band they have at the main stage was Disney music stars Aly and A.J. as you know if you get popular stars like it going to be a frenzy of music that i can not stand and not only that it a little too crazy some body told me that over 200 kids was at the stage at about 9 AM a near two hours before city fest open and almost five full hours.

all for a made for tv group, and i was thinking what will these you kids will be thinking about music in the Next ten years and they will be think did i listen to that, i should know Before i broke pre-teen phase of my life i listen to almost the same kind of music on TV and on the radio but after listing the same crap over and over aging finally i found my indie Garden angle in 1996 [Thanks Juliana Hatfield] and the same Stars who ruled the charts way back when have now been downgraded to D-list star on bad really show on VH1.

So in the instead of my own music taste i stay away for cityfest as far away as possible from the hours of noon to 6 PM and during that time i was typing the friday report and when to my friend Teri-Leyn moving sale [she moving to Poland] so i drop by and stay there for about two hours and move on i got to the 2nd downtown [new Center]at about before 6 PM and get ready to listen to real music for the day.

and i got to tell you the guy who producer the park stage Sterling know his music and his put on a great stage on this day as i saw for the first time the wonderful band from mid-Michigan called "Lighting Love" and there sound is so quirky and so fun and so lovely on stage there lead singer Leah Diehl remind me of Joanna Newsome without the Harp.

They won over the crowd sterling ask them to play a encore but they run out of songs so they play one of there 1st song over aging i thought there are a real good band will hear them over the years.

They have a very good warm up act was Sliverghost the band who made up Marcie Bolen and Deleano Acevedo and they were good but not at the level of there gig at the Hamtramck blowout, i not saying there was nothing wrong with the set they was fun to listen too with there mix with mix of Lo-fi new wave and rock style and was looking great up there not only that it was great to see marcie again up there in the Cityfeast stage which was cool.

but the crowd that got a great draw was Culture city under the radar fave "Great Lakes Myth Society" now i have seen them ten times already and there one of the best live band who know to put on a good show not only that this was a make up show because for a gig that was also wash out in Ann Arbor the same system that wash out Wednesday line up at cityfest.

also i saw the second half of the "the Beggers" who put on really great show as they was harming it up on the Pure Detroit Second Ave. Stage and they know who to have fun which there style of rock which have a frat party style to it.

One one more day to go at Cityfest before we all go back to work on Monday, it going to be a nice all around for the last day so enjoy it and i hear a crazy rumors that a Funkadelic Mothership will land in front of the mainstage at about 5:30 PM and what i have been told the mothership will bring in the funk, i did know what that mean but when i see it i get back to you.

END

DAY THREE
JULY 3rd, 2008

Yo Kevin, Don't Cancelled us, bro

Last night was the big night to see a band that i would have paid on every other night would paid 20 bucks to see at any other gig in Detroit area. but since it was a July 4th holiday we were the lucky one to see on of the best collective in all of Canada, it was the best gig that have all be waiting for, it the must fun we have all real fans was having a fun time, it was one of the well know alt. bands around and at the end of the gig it was a great show that almost did not happened.

Yes, of all the gigs that would not cancelled in a major Detroit gig fest it would be the Broken Social Scene the popular Toronto group almost most pulled out in the last second when lead frontman Kevin Drew the mastermind of this big band who can range anywhere from 5 to 27 member woke up with a bad back he went to his cairoparther later in the morning and it was found to have a mid to lower back he took a pain killer and thought of Scrubbing the whole gig.

But Kevin drew did not want to disappoint his fans who have seen BSS, those who have not seen BSS [this blogger included] and those who came all away from there home country Canada did the show as he put it like a 72 year old man.

The band ran thought there select cut from there three recorded albums Feel Good Lost (2001), You Forgot It in People (2002), and there breakout album Broken Social Scene[2005] and well as some of there show case album Broken Social Scene Presents... Kevin Drew - Spirit If... (2007)and Broken Social Scene Presents... Brendan Canning - Something For All Of Us... (2008).

They play there well know songs like "Stars and Sons", "Pitter Patter Goes My Heart", and "Cause = Time", "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl" and "Lover's Spit".

i also have a fun time hearing listen "Fire Eye'd Boy" from the last album which was well played and not only that to warp up there set which took over a ninety minutes did a acoustic version of there one of my fave song "Almost Crimes" from "You Forgot It in People" which was a very good version.

you have to give to Kevin Drew and his band mates for showing and playing the gig thought out the pain Kevin was felling because it this gig was a no go it wouldn't be good coming of the heavy rains force Cancelled gig of De La Soul and that would have not been good and if you wondering there was seven members and no female member of the B.S.S. so no Feist[who i saw back in April at the Fillmore], No Amy Millan[who i saw play a great show at the Crofoot ballroom back in Late March.]and no Emily Haines [who i have seen more times then any of the ladies of the BSS, four times(3 with her main band "Metric"and one with her backing band "The Soft Skelintion)]

Lucky i got to see "Broken Social Scene" whole set start to finish[which by the way was introduce by Magic Bag Booker and a DJ we miss hearing on Detroit Radio] before that i was listen on the park stage to a local collective which been getting a lot of local buzz as of late "The Four Hours Friend"

The Group fronted by Dale Wilson and his pretty as a picture Girlfriend Jenna Cook and Ex-Ghost City member Stephen Palmer the band played a very good 45 minutes set of atl rock Country it was great to see live i may even ask them to played one of my culture city live DJ Nights, and there great to listen to.

also i saw Eddie Baranek and his new dirty bluegrass band Called "Shotgun Wedding" who i thought was good but you have to understand if you every read this site from the start i am not a big country fan expect if i hear some Devin Scivan play on my CD player.

i was mostly tired from the night before where "the dials" play at the Belmont and not only that was doing a Wrap up from last night and there was a period i was tried and sleepy and worst one of my close bar friend was having a picnic on the 4th of july but i have to go to cityfest, but i did come back did taste the food but i was full with in 30 minutes and fell for the rest of the night. Ouch!

Two more days to go and on most Saturday in years past i would be looking forward for music line up but promoter handed over daylight to Disney and worst got us Aly and A.J..

But Don't worried Culture City Warriors there will be good music Today from the like of Calexico, The Muggs,Zoos of Berlin, and news sound from Great Lakes Myth Society,Silverghost and a new i have been waiting to see because of a great name Lightening Love so the day is not lost.

Live and Local Review - 2008 Comerica Cityfest

DAY TWO
JULY 3rd, 2008

The Day One Do Over

Welcome to Day two of Comerica Cityfet or is it Day one.

Last Night was the first real Good Day of the midyear music/food/culture/shopping event in Detroit New Center Area after Wednesday night heavy down pour that wiped out the night entertainment and force NOMO and De La Soul to cancelled there gig and force Four band who were going to play the Pure Detroit and Park Stage to the Garden Bowl inside the Magic stick.

After a full 14 hours later with a little Drying out, a little sleep and a little Chang of Clothes we go back to W. Grand Bvld. and 2nd St. for night two and this was a decent line up Not a big form the wash up night one but good.

During the wait For the music to begin i check out the offend during the Cityfest including a display of the NASCAR event at Indy speedway for there Late July "Brickyard 400" i got some cool trading ad cards and there was a Sharp display of the New HDTV which we may need for the Digital TV Crossover in February 2009 and i got a chapinoo sampler at the Starbucks van.

The Night Big act was on the main stage when "The Zomibe" a old 60's band From the UK feathing Colin Blunstone on lead vocals and Rod Argent on keyboards and vocals, now i was not expecting much i was thinking to say around for a few song and go to the park stage, but the old timers who been around since the 60's keep me in the whole time.

The band know how to play a great song into building up the song adding drama to the song climaxing to end they even got in some of the youngster in to the gig and not only that there was into it.

Other band i like was Danny Kroha brand new band "The Readies" and i got to tell this band is really better than his other well know band "The Gories" and "The Demolition Doll Rods" the band played there a monder old school Rock and roll, the songwriting is that good and it played out really well, to show you way Danny Kroha is a true Survier of the Detroit Scene.

Also playing a great at the park stage is the alt.country rock band "Scarlet Oaks" who is so great live and as they make there so more rock more than country and not only than then drummer noelle christine is still a great drummer and there good

Now because of time other distraction and other gig i only saw part of other bands, i saw a little bit of "Tally Hall" from Ann Arbor who was O.K. they would sound better it was only inside, also saw part of local rock band Duende! with there Western psychedelic sound, i thought they was good nothing special, and i did see the last band on the park stage "The Volebeats" i only saw three songs from them from the band that feather Matt Smith i think they was good, but i have to leave Cityfest to go to the Belmont to see the Dials playing on the same night[Dials review will come after Cityfest.]

So two day, three more to go and i got to tell you it will be a big free Social Scene on the parking lot when Broken Social Scene play to the crowd and it going to be fun.

Today live at Cityfest with tonight 4Cast

Live and Local Review - 2008 Comerica Cityfest

DAY ONE
WEDNESDAY JULY 2ND

Welcome to Soak cityfest

For the first time in almost Seven years i have been caught in a real bad storm at a major outdoor music gig, as it rain and rain and rain all night long as the entire SE Michigan area as well as the New Center Area as the rain made impossible to do the rest of the night.

before i left for cityfest all the weather people did say it was going to rain late in the night you know it was going to be bad when radar was showing Thunder storm coming up in the Detroit area and i thought the was like the office was going to flood aging for the second time in a week.[Which it did not, Thank god.]

The Sky began to turn dark around the 6:30-7 PM i was at the main stage watching Detroit News Battle of the band winner "Avienne" in the middle of the set i saw a lot of cloud lighting [not the ground lighting] and i thought it would get bad pretty quick, but it it hold it own and it did not rain until the last song of there set where it begin to drizzle.

it began to rain and i was only thing one thing go inside the biggest complex with a long walkway under ground, i went in the Fisher Building to ride out the storm during the nearly two hours as it began to rain heavy many of the people who was there begin filing in to get away from the rain and not only that get away from the lighting.

I Went downstairs to the Clubhouse bar which is located downstairs in the Fisher building, i went to check of there any radar show how bad the weather was but a present surprise the TV have "So you think you can Dance" on and the local Fox Station WJBK-TV have a little mini map with live radar and it was raining all over and i was thinking there is no way they can get off the rest of the night

During the long wait for any word of when it going to clear up the four bands Magic Shop, The Dead Bodies,The Hentchmen, and The Silent Years got in contact with the good folks at the magic stick to book a last minutes gig for those who got rain out, but since there was a band already playing at the stick the only other place to play was the Garden Bowl and they play it the the dining lobby.

by 9:30 PM know the day was a total loss everybody who was at the fisher they made it way to the magic stick, the worst part about that we did not get word if the whole day cancelled but judging by the radar it was, but knowing there is four more day of this to go but the good news it will be in better weather.

as for the music before the rain i did see two band at city fest, Former Sirens Aran Ruth play her mellow down solo set as she play a nice folk pop which was nice on the ears and not only that she look very old school dress in 1940's dress.

and my opinion the band i saw the South Lyon band and winner of this year Detroit News Battle of the band Avienne, i thought they was good but some they sound too close to all the bad radio and overproduce song i hear all the time, one of my personal highlights was have one song warp around "the Verve" "Bitter Sweet Symphony" which i thought was cool.

After about two hours of waiting it out and going from Fisher to Northern Lights for a short time and a couple of attempt i did get to the stick as i did catgut the last song from The Magic Shop Steve newaur brand new band. i only got to see the last two band "The Dead Bodies" who i thought was good and the best buzz band in Detroit right now "The Silent Years" who did a great get with a crazy finish in the end let me tell you this band will be fun to watch in the years to come.

well i going to finish up now licking my wound and drying out for day two.

Today live at Cityfest with tonight 4Cast

As you know if you where there last night

The Wednesday portion of city fest was total wash out big time with a lot of rain pouring in the SE Michigan area and let me tell you it was not pretty form going to point A to point B in rain that won't stop.

So that mean Bump,NOMO and the star of this main stage Hip hop De La Soul was cancelled and worst De La Soul had to fly out of town so you can forget De La Soul, but "The Magic Shop", "The Hentchmen", "The Dead Bodies" and "The Silent Years" all relocated for a last minutes show at the The Garden Bowl inside the magic stick.

all dought last night was a total washout, Cityfest continued and the good news it will not rain for the rest of the weekend so there is clear sky all around, so that mean Broken Social Scene still OK for Friday Night.

and According to the Unofficial Official wheater page of all culture City the Local4caster from WDIV, don't worried it will be clear from 6 to Midnight [it closed at 11 PM] with temp at 72 and dropping to around 60 by night end.

you here me correct, there have been a line-up change for the last day of Comerica Cityfest, and it all going down in the Main stage where blues great Bobby “Blue” Bland was support to play today.

but according to the Detroit Free Press thur a spokepreson at cityfest, he fell ill once arriving in Detroit and will not preform today at Cityfest.
